If you look very closely, you can see his zigzag tracks just to the right of the main ridge. He's still a ski instructor at age 84.

Steep is a great documentary on ski mountaineering that includes his story. He was truly an American pioneer of it. That photo is the only one that exists of his first tracks down the grand. He went up in that airplane with a local reporter the next day, who took the picture.

I think the East Wall at A Basin is nuts. That is just insane.

Great piece by Lou Dawson, famous ski mountaineer in his own right, and creator of Wild Snow.

Why did he do it in June? Is it safer in summer?

I'll be backpacking just behind that mountain in 3 weeks...hope the snow remains!

I was in Jackson Hole a few years ago with some buddies, and we were in the million dollar cowboy bar. An old guy was shooting pool. He was using one of those walkers that double as a wheelchair, and he had an oxygen mask.

One of my buddies convinced another one that it was Bill Briggs, so he goes over there and starts chatting him up telling him how much he admires him.

What makes Briggs' accomplishment greater is that he had to hike to the top in order to ski down. And he did both with a bum hip.
