Above-board company selling a cool service?

or

Data gathering scheme ran by shadowy Google associates?

Getting customer's to pay for their data collections on the front end AND monetizing the data to Rx companies on the back end is a pretty baller business model. However, it has probably opened a can of worms.

I'm not sure how legitimate it is. It said I was a 68 year old Korean woman.

I was looking at my face in the mirror this morning and thought, "damn my nose is getting big. I wonder if I have any jewish DNA? I should do 23andMe and find out."

I was contacted by a distant relative I didn't know existed after signing up and he gave me a complete paternal family tree back to 1804 and a book about our ancestral village etc. Signing up filled in all the gaps. Pretty pretty cool. Well worth it just for that.

I think you could have asked that question in the other DNA thread

I have a relative who found out he has hemachromatosis after getting his 23andMe results. He saw he had the gene for it and then had his doctor due further testing to confirm.

Now there are some lifestyle changes that he has made, and he should have no problems from his condition. Without 23andMe he wouldn't have found out about it until he started having symptoms. At that point there could have already been irreversible damaged done to the body.

I think it's cool. I'm less worried about DNA stuff being shared than, like, internet or phone history being made public or used against me.

Super cool service. Got it done 7 years ago and have really enjoyed reviewing the mass amount of data as well as finding new relatives.
