quote:

New Orleans: Northwest of Dauphine Street, northeast of Ursulines Avenue, north of St. Charles Avenue and south of Magazine Street are areas of concern.

New York: Be wary in Times Square and at the Statue of Liberty, and don’t go to Harlem, the Bronx or Central Park at night.

The Statute of Liberty is an odd one. My wife works in the Bronx. That place is a disaster.

Germany doesn’t warn its citizens about any specific cities, but it does caution against letting it all hang out: “Although the laws in individual states categorizing nudity as ‘indecent exposure’, are rarely asserted and punished, those laws should absolutely be followed. Nude bathing and changing clothes at the beach stirs up public agitation and can lead to unpleasantnesses.”

There is some common factor between all these cities and the location described. I just can't put my finger on it..

New Orleans: Northwest of Dauphine Street

Dauphine runs from SW to NE, so I assume they mean "North" of the intersection of Dauphine and Canal - that's Iberville and Louis Armstrong Park - I totally get that.

quote:

northeast of Ursulines Avenue

Meh. Maybe there were a spate of reports in that area? I'm not saying I just wander around there, Joe Clark Prep, Governor Nicholls and Barracks St. I understand it, but I'm not sure of anything that would make this leap out.

quote:

north of St. Charles Avenue

So what are they talking about? MLK? Napoleon? Jefferson?

quote:

south of Magazine Street

Are they trying to say St. Thomas without saying it? Do they mean from Lower Garden all the way to the Park (similiar issues with "North of St. Charles")?

New Orleans is a big city and I can understand being cautious because of the history of crime and violence. However, other than the first one, above (which is, sadly, a no brainer, even for people who live there) the rest are really a little too vague or expansive to really be of help.

the French are more racist than Americans in general

the idea that America is this huge, racist country and Europe is this bastion of equality is insanity...utter mythology
