New Orleans Saints right tackle Zach Strief knew two things going into the offseason.

Strief, now 32 and heading into his 11th season, knew the team could look very different within a matter of months. That was quickly proven correct when 10-year veterans Marques Colston and Jahri Evans were released, and tight end Ben Watson signed with the Ravens in free agency.

"I think it would be silly for any of us to be surprised at this point," Strief said. "And to be honest with you, (the release of Jahri Evans) was hard, Marques Colston was hard, Ben Watson was hard and he hasn't even been around as long. The guys that you get really close to, it's hard to lose, especially those types of guys that have been pillars here...

"Those are the guys that made us successful, so it's hard to lose them and I feel older and older every day. There's just not a lot of guys left from years past, but that's the nature of it."

Strief also knew the Saints still felt he had something left to offer despite drafting Andrus Peat in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. So when he left the Saints facility in January, he felt as comfortable as anyone could be in that position.

"I've met with coach Payton the day after the season the last four years ... we had exit meetings, so I get to know pretty quick what they're thinking," Strief said. "I'm fortunate here that those guys have always been honest with me. What they've said has come true, so right or wrong I take it as truth and coach (Payton) said that they wanted me back, so I kind of knew early that would be the case, which is nice...

"If they'd changed their minds two weeks in I wouldn't have been totally shocked but they made it pretty clear they wanted me back."

At the end of last season, Strief said he said he would be happy to be back with the Saints, and only the Saints, even if that meant taking a backup role.

quote:

Right now, he's still the presumed starter at right tackle, but will now go into his second straight offseason presumably fighting off Peat for the starting right tackle spot. Peat played in 12 games last season, starting eight as a backup tackle and guard.

So far, he has not managed to wrestle the position away from the older veteran.

That's a battle that will have to wait until training camp to crank up, as the limited nature of OTAs don't really show the true development of an offensive lineman.

"I think two weeks into training camp you start getting an idea of how things are coming together, because even in OTAs it's so different from actual real football for us and I think it's hard to make a determination," Strief said. "We have a ton of talent. ... I think none of us were real happy with how it went last year. ... coach (Dan) Roushar has already pushed us quite a bit and I think that will pay dividends."

He's the one guy that shouldn't have been brought back and I think the main reason he's still with the team is to bring along Peat because Peat isn't ready. Man, it still sucks not having Colston here anymore and considering no one has even brought him in for a workout, I imagine he'll be retiring soon.

I don't see how you can say that (implying we should have kept Colston & Evans over him) when neither Colston nor Evans have had any activity in FA thus far. It sucks cutting guys like that, but eventually it has to be done. While he wasn't great last season, he wasn't bad besides for 1 game.

What makes you think Peat isn't ready? He had his lumps at guard, but anytime he played tackle I was impressed.

Strief is a good mentor and can be our swing tackle.

I expected Strief to be back as a backup. My concern is if our 1st rounder from last year cannot even push him out at RT. Peat was supposed to be a quality LT and here we are trying to move him to G because he cannot win the RT job from an aging RT who was not a star.

And Armstead couldn't beat out Charles Brown to start the year. Is that really your argument?

Why?

He's excellent depth on a very team friendly contract.
Not to mention, he likely brings veteran leadership to the locker room.

Forget Terron Armstead. PEAT WAS OUR GUY ALL ALONG AT LT!

And there's still a ton of bust potential in the first round...

Too true. 35% of first rounders never even become starters.

If you look at our first rounders going back to Ricky Williams the only one who completely busted was Sullivan.

That's a pretty good track record compared to the league average.

Lost me there. He may or may not be a standout RT anymore, but he's still at worst a middle of the road starter at RT. Evans was terrible and Colston wasn't doing very much the last two seasons.

Why does that matter? Ppl act like he's a bum and didn't do anything.

Seeing as he missed part of OTA's bc of school, I'm not surprised he didn't beat our a 20 year vet to begin the season.

Remember who your replying to.

People want to write off rookies let them.
They just want to be miserable.

Pretty much this. If a 1st round pick isn't an immediate all-pro caliber starter, then he is a bust. Players cannot improve from year to year. It just doesn't happen, according to some.

Exactly. I vaguely remember some people (not everyone though) questioning the Armstead pick when he didn't play right away

Most people on here were patient with him but there were still a few that were calling him a wasted pick. But people tend to be more patient with later round picks

I expect a player who contributes 30-50% of the snaps for a 1st-2nd rounder. I don't expect a star, but if they're not injured at least a form of contributing

Armstead was a raw 3rd round project from a small school who won the starting job by mid season. What's your point?
