I wouldn't say that. We made the trade and everyone thought we were going to take Trufant.

That being said, Yes Sullivan was a terrible pick. Yes he was a bust. But Russell Erxleben is the worst first round pick of the Saints.

Really? The guy started to run better towards the end of the season. If the coaching staff didn't believe in him they wouldn't have traded Ivory for a 4th.

I don't see how a sleazebag kicker (turned punter) drafted in the 1st, couldn't hack it in the pros, turned white collar crook is anywhere close to Mark Ingram. Sorry.

Has anybody mentioned that we traded two first round picks (17 and the 18th we got for Ricky Williams) to move up to 6 and take Sullivan? That was a dreadful pick in every way imaginable.

Still, I give the nod to Erxleben. Taking a kicker/punter in the first is terrible value even IF he pans out... and he flopped.

Drafting a kicker in the first round. Jesus. That just makes me "lol" every time I hear it.People(non saint fans) had to be laughing their asses off when that happened.

Most of the 60s-early 70s busts were monumental busts, even compared to Erx and Sully.

We're talking top-ten picks who couldn't start for the freaking worst expansion team in the history of sports. You have no earthly idea how truly incompetent the first ten years were unless you lived it.

Sullivan would have been a 5 year starter during the J.D. Roberts era.

Erxleben and its not even close. We selected a kicker in the 1st round, the first and only team to ever do so . Not only that, but the guy garbage. I still can't believe we drafted a kicker at #11. Unreal.

If I remember correctly one of those didn't make the team.

Easy answer: This is an LSU based message board and Ingram went to Bama.

In 1975 the Saints picked 7th and 12th and took Larry Burton and Kurt Schumacher. Go back and look them up.

It's almost like they took Jonathan Sullivan in that draft and then came back five picks later and took ANOTHER Jonathan Sullivan.

They could have had Freddie Solomon and Doug France with those picks. The only reason Burton and Schumacher aren't being discussed is because nobody even remembers them.

Kind of surprised no one has mentioned that we gave up an entire draft and two picks for the next to draft Ricky Williams. That was the dumbest thing I've ever seen in organized sports.

That hurt us in more ways than him not being what they thought he would be.
