Williams, Payton, Loomis, players all may face long suspensions

Lengthy and unprecedented suspensions appear to be coming for those involved in the Saints’ practice of paying bounties to players who injured opponents.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that the NFL is considering long suspensions for head coach Sean Payton, General Manager Mickey Loomis, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and players who were involved in bounties.

How long? Maske cited an unnamed source who said suspensions could be half a season or longer. One person familiar with the NFL’s thinking on the matter mentioned the decision in 1963 by NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle to suspend Packers running back Paul Hornung and Lions defensive tackle Alex Karras for an entire season for gambling.

Williams, who ran the bounty program and who’s now the defensive coordinator of the Rams, would seem to be the person who would get the longest suspension. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher should probably be in the process of coming up with a Plan B at the defensive coordinator position on his coaching staff because Williams, the Plan A, may be unavailable for some or all of the season.

But Payton and Loomis appear to be facing discipline as well, and players involved could also be suspended. The NFL said 22 to 27 players on the Saints were involved, but the league hasn’t said who those players are. We don’t know how many are still in the league, how many are still with the Saints and whether some players were ringleaders of the bounty program and will face more significant than others.

What is clear is that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is preparing to come down hard. After the Spygate scandal, Goodell stripped the Patriots of a first-round pick, fined Bill Belichick $500,000 and fined the Patriots $250,000. All indications are that the sanctions for the Saints will be significantly more severe.

I dont get how this could warrant a more severe punishment than flat out cheating. We werent taping our opponent's practice, we were simply trying to destroy them so they could no longer practice.

Loomis is essentially an employee of the league in regards to suspensions and fines. Although if he were fined or suspended it would most likely come down as the league forcing the Saints to do so.

NFL can't go to far with this. If you cripple the saints so they cant play the NFL and many teams will lose money! The NFL will never allow themselves to lose money!

Put out a bounty on Goodell.

My friend says he believes there is either a curse or the league does whatever it can to keep host cities out of their Super Bowls. If our entire defense gets suspended for the season I'll be a believer.

the problem comes in where the saints told the nfl they would cease the bounties and they kept doing it. basicallly lied

I agree that the NFL will not cripple itself. The Saints are becoming a very popular team around the country, making them unattractive by suspending key elements is just not smart for the outcome of this upcoming season wether they make it to the SB or not. There will be consequences, but I do not see them suspending Sean Payton for more than maybe 3 games. Players might be a different story I could see players getting suspended for months at a time.

Someone said this in the past few days on WWL Radio and Bobby Hebert quoted Spags as saying " It was something he never saw a need for, and that he would not let it affect his vision of what he sees for his coming years in NOLA"

This makes no sense if they suspended half of our defensive unit how in the hell would we field a team for next season. If this were to happen this way I hope we bring in a real rag tag group that starts blowing shite up. For one season take the gloves of and bring in any and every bad arse out there that everyone else has been avoiding. Yeah I know stupid idea blah blah blah
