NBC SPORTS

quote:

Saints kicker Wil Lutz keeps getting kicks blocked, and he says there’s no one to blame but him.

Saints coach Sean Payton doesn’t necessarily agree.

Even though Payton was upset with the latest blocked kick (which was nearly returned for a touchdown by the Panthers, a week after an extra point was blocked and returned for a game-winning conversion by the Broncos), he said he believes in the rookie kicker.

“You’ve heard me say this,” Payton said, via Christopher Dabe of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, “Clearly, we have the right kicker.”

Lutz wasn’t as generous, saying last night’s against the Panthers was “on me.”

“It definitely tests your mental capacity, how much you can handle,” Lutz said. “Other than that, I’m learning a lot about myself and what I need to fix to be able to be a kicker in the NFL.”

He can’t fix the blocking, and Payton acknowledged that was a problem last night. But Lutz wasn’t hearing it.

“You got 300-pound guys lined up against you, and someone is going to get close, but blocking had nothing to do with that kick,” he said. “Everyone is going to get pushed back a yard, it’s part of being on the field-goal team. It’s my job to get it up there.”

Lutz has had three blocked kicks, and two others deflected which went through. And while that’s clearly an issue, he’s also hit enough kicks for Payton to keep him around, and keep everyone else on notice.

Like the poor wee lad is going to blame the massive linemen for his kicks getting blocked. Or the incompetent coaching staff.

frick it. I'm buying a Lutz jersey.

TBH, I actually see potential in the kid.

It's the special teams coach that needs to hit the road...should have many seasons ago.

His misses have all mostly been from 50+ with one of them being 60. He's been money from all other ranges with the exception of the blocks

Now ask the oline the same thing. I guarantee they will have the same response. No one is going to blame a teammate

I had more confidence in Hartley than Lutz and it's not close

...and a few others at least that were low enough to get blocked but just didn't.

This is a ridiculous stat.

Lutz better keep his mouth shut. He is 22 years old and has loads of potential but this is happening way too often. And we know how much patience Payton has with kickers.

Two of the blocks (NY and Den) were on the blocking 100%.

Last night and the two that still went in are on him.

So only 1 block that cost us was his fault.

Also most (all?) of his misses have been long distance (45+ yards; most of those being 50+).

It's obvious that Lutz one of Payton's "boys." Like a white Joe Morgan.

If he EVER cuts him, he'll be back two weeks later.

Really like that he's owning this, rightfully or not.

This one was definitely on him. That fricker came out low like his two tips that still went in.

But the Giants and Broncos game are 100% not on him. That was the blocking.

He does seem to be a little slow once the ball is snapped. He has a slight hesitation some times

The kid has undeniable leg talent. These recent problems are fixable. We have been fricked at kicker too long to let a guy like this get away.

Yeah, it's really fricking complicated to kick slightly more under the ball on XP's and short-ish FG's to clear them over the line, you fricking bird brain.

they need to look at his trajectory and see if the can bring him down a club. Film his foot position and work on where he's making contact. I would bet he hits the ball more in the middle than near the bottom.

This best thing to come of Lutz's issues is that McMahon might finally get the boot.

That is it in a nutshell. Lutz hits a low line drive kick every time. Well if you are in practice kicking on the side you look good hitting 50 yarders as they say it doesn't matter if they clear the bar by 1 ft or 10 ft.
