Many of these guys want big contracts and when they get them their production falls off. They should have a clause that if their production falls below the numbers they achieved before the new contract their money is cut back as well.. Simple as that!

Too many factors involved that contribute to individual statistics. They sign the big contract but lose good players around them significantly impacting how they can do their own job.

thats a good way to blow up a team. imagine our RBs attitude when they arent getting the ball (like now) and their pay is suffering. the RBs are running very well, but is it their fault they dont get enough touches?

individual players would become very self centered and worry about themselves instead of the "team" mentality. if their contracts do not depend on how the team does but only how they do, why care?

So when a player is negotiating a contract do you think he is worried about the team? I don't think so.. If that was the case they would not go after all the money they can get and burn up a teams salary cap. Your stats can be tied to your touches so if the team is doing something different you are not penalized for it. But do you really think the team is not going to continue giving you the ball if you are being successful. Don't think so!! Players do do not negotiate their contracts on what the Teams has done, its on what they have done...

1st off we do not have a superstar running back on our roster and our team is built around Drew Brees. We use all of our backs and always have under SP.

Can you show us an example of this?

And yes when they are negotiating a contract they are looking out for themselves. However, your original question was why not negotiate contracts on a play by play basis. First of all there are NO fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL. Second, this will not happen because every other player on that side of the ball impacts each individuals play. Not trying to be disrespectful to your comments but it goes a little deeper than what you are thinking. I'm guessing that all bench players should take league minimum then if it's all determined by per play statistics?

so you like how we used deuce, then reggie, and now ingram under payton?

we are #16 in rushing attempts despite being #2 in ypc and #1 in rushing TDs. but yes, we obviously dont scare away from what works.

I'm not sure what your point is. Are you saying that Ingram or Bush are superstar backs? Ingram was doing better until his injury, so we still don't know about him yet. Bush has proven to be a journeymen back, being on his third team now. What we need is balance. All i'm saying in my original post is that these players only worry about how much money they can get and do not look at how their contracts affect the team. This is a team sport.

Not play by play. But if your play declines the following year your contract is adjusted accordingly. Back up players are not breaking the bank. It's players that have good years and ask for enormous contracts. I have no problem with them getting payed for their success but by the same token if their play has declined, the following year their pay should be adjusted...

Drew Bress has not been the same QB since getting his contract but because of his contract the team has suffered. Don't get be wrong, I like Drew and he has been great for NO in more ways then one. But he is in Decline, mainly in his arm strength. He under throws most passes over 40 yds and teams know this. Therefore, have started to play our receivers tight to take away short and mid range throws, because on the long stuff they will be able to recover and break up the pass.
