What's the main reason Payton is going with a 3-4?

We gave up the most yards in history and a lot of our players fit a 3-4 more than a 4-3

Most of the successful defenses in the league run a 3-4 base. It would take a while to overhaul our defense to Spags scheme: smaller quicker linemen, corners who were good at zone coverage.

Because SP is tired of not being able to find a decent 43 coordinator, and he is tired of the defense holding back the franchise.

-I'm not a Ryan fan (either of them) but he was probably the best fit for this team available.

Well for starters typically there is a beastly run-stopping nose guard. We dont have anyone that remotely fits that bill imo.

What players do you think fit the 3-4 specifically?

* Im not disagreeing with the switch, just curious why..

So you dont need a good nose guard in a 3-4 (or are you saying we already have one)?

I'm guessing you don't visit the board often, there has been a thread about this topic almost everyday since the announcement

It depends on what type of 3-4 you're running. The kind we're running doesn't require that. Ratliff was the NT in Dallas and he was 287 or somewhere around that.

Besides, Bunkley has rated out very well in his short time at NT in Denver, I think.

Bunkly
Hicks
Jordan
Wilson
Johnson
Walker
Lofton
Hawthorne
Galette
Harper (will actually fit nice in this system)

The 3-4 we're running is one gap (I think; I forget the difference between one gap and two gap) and ask the down linemen to penatrate and be disruptive, not simply hold their blocks to let the linebackers roam free. If it was the latter, we'd need a big fat guy in the middle.

I think he took the year off to objectively look at the state of the NFL, and in the process he decided that the 3-4 would work better for us.
