I agree for the most part. I think the jump from this season to next season will be enough to have a strong D in 2014, as long as some of our young guys develop nicely this season.

We're gonna have some good defensive performances this season but I see a lot of struggles and shoot outs.

Cam is gonna be elite after this season so that's a good start.

Who cares if they had the ball for 58 minutes and put up 600 yards of offense. If we held them to 13 points, its 13 points.

What doesn't make sense about that?
You can't expect that to hold up.

Giving up 300 yards a half will not end with 13 points regularly.

Yeah there is truth to this. It seemed like Houston had a lot of drops tonight.

We're not going to be facing that good of an offense every week either.

281 yards, 40 snaps I think and they had the ball 18 minutes

none of that matters

13 points

that matters.

2-5 in the red zone matters

5-12 on 3rd downs matters

0-2 on 4th downs matters

Forever trusting who we are

Oh, I agree.

I'm reserving judgment until the regular season first and foremost. And then, like you said, the Texans have a solid well rounded offense even without Foster. It's not a good litmus test for the new Saints D in preseason game 3.

Smith cost 8 million towards this years salary cap if we keep him 7.5 million if we cut him

We may be 2 drafts away from being a great defense, but I think we have the pieces in place this year to have a top 20 defense.

That's the best case scenario. I'm afraid that we will be closer to 25...maybe worse.

Considering the team has fared rather poorly with defensive draft packs you could probably spot them half a dozen drafts and not come up with a decent pass rusher.

Define successful. Do we need to be a top 15 D to be successful? Top 10 or top 5?

Or can success be measured by getting timely stops and winning the game because that's exactly what we did today.

If you meant to say we need a couple of drafts to become a top 10 defense I say you are closer to being right though I honestly believe it only hinges on 2-3 players whether that comes in FA or in one or two drafts or whatever it is.

The Dline is good 2 spots deep and we have 3-4 guys that can play ILB. Vaccaro is one of the safeties of the future. We still don't know what we have at OLB because 3 of the top 4 guys haven't played yet.

My worry is Greer is getting older(but clearly still our best corner) and Lewis may not be the long term answer. We could be needing 2 corners and a safety next year.

My hope is Lewis, Galette, Wilson, and Butler(next year) pan out then we only need a corner and a safety.

The Saints don't have two years to wait on the defense to catch up. Brees ain't getting any younger, our offense is built to win right now. That POS defense has been in the works for 8 years now and no matter what you do or who you bring in, the defense is always a liability.

This defense held the Texans, an offensive juggernaut in this league, albeit without Foster, to only 13 points in a half. With our offense, that's all we need from them.

If you were watching this game, the defense still made alot of mistakes and were really lucky that 13 wasn't at least 21

Foster is a huge reason why they are an offensive juggernaut.

So... would this be a good time to point out our 1st round draft flops on offense that had they been defensive picks maybe we wouldnt be in this position?

nah. ill find another time.

I would say that the reason we are in this position is due to the fact the LB position has been ignored for several years. The busted 1st round picks don't help but switching to the 3-4 without proper linebackers could be a big problem for a defense that has a history of being bad.
