Walt's Updated Mock 01/11

11. New Orleans Saints: Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford
The Saints have tons of issues on defense. One major problem is their inability to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks from the edge, outside of what Cameron Jordan does. They need a bookend pass-rusher across from the Pro Bowler.
Solomon Thomas would be a great addition to New Orleans' roster. He single-handedly dominated his bowl game, as he was completely unblockable.
Other Notables:
2. San Francisco 49ers: DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame
4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
5. Tennessee Titans: Jamal Adams, S, LSU
6. New York Jets: Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
8. Carolina Panthers: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
10. Buffalo Bills: Pat Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
......And there's the Derek Barnett jump that we all knew was coming.
42. New Orleans Saints: Desmond King, CB, Iowa
When the Saints released Keenan Lewis in the offseason, it was pretty evident that they would have issues at cornerback this season, and that has turned out to be the case. They need an upgrade across from Delvin Breaux so they can stop starting the likes of B.W. Webb.
76. New Orleans Saints: Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson
The Saints spent their first-round pick last year on Sheldon Rankins, but they still need another defensive tackle if they don't re-sign Nick Fairley.
107. New Orleans Saints: Alex Anzalone, LB, Florida
I still can't believe the Saints signed James Laurinaitis. Did they not watch how horrible he was for the Rams? Seriously, what were they thinking? They can make amends by selecting a solid inside linebacker prospect early in the draft.

Yeah. He's kind of been like a less-discussed guy but now that we're hitting the offseason people are starting to realize and he is moving up in mocks.
I really, really like Thomas and I think he is the 3rd best DE in this draft. Complete player. Dominant edge rusher and also very very good against the run. I said this in another thread, he honestly really reminds me of the way Cam plays.

Damn, they jumped Pat Mahomes to a top 10 pick.

I would take another Cam in a heart beat. I honestly haven't seen too much of him. Don't think I watched a single Stanford game this year, so a lot less familiar with him than Barnett. I like that comparison/description though!
quote:Was SHOCKED at that, too. Was always a Mahomes fan at TT, but a top 10 pick is a huge jump from what I was thinking.

With some luck Adoree might fall to us in the 2nd

Could be a reaction to Josh Allen deciding to stay another year. Walter had him really high before.

Idk about him as a pro, but Mahomes was the most impressive QB LSU played against in a while

Agreed. I feel that Mahomes maybe the jewel QB of this class. I'm surprised it took this long for him to begin to get the attention he deserved.
I was hoping he would hang around to the 2nd so the Saints could possibly snag him. Everything checks off with Mahomes. Arm strength, pocket awareness, athleticism, size, accuracy & he even has the plus of being the son of a former MLB pitcher.

Football wasn't his first love, and certainly isn't in his blood. Mahomes' father, Pat, played Major League Baseball for more than a decade, passing along athletic genes and an affinity for line drives and fastballs. Rest assured: Mahomes is the first Texas Tech quarterback to have been taught the art of hitting by Alex Rodriguez, or to have shagged fly balls from Robin Ventura during batting practice. "I'm glad he picked football," offensive tackle Le'Raven Clark said.

I agree with all of this. I watched that bowl game and he was a man among boys to say the least.

Yeah I don't want to cheer against Fournette but that would make it an obligation. Him and Cam in the same backfield would cause fits.

I just don't see how Carolina can pass up Cam Robinson there. They have need tackles badly. Trai Turner is a dominating guard but they were forced to play him at right tackle this season & he just wasn’t the same player at that position. The left tackle position wasn't much better either.

They definitely need a tackle but I don't think Cam has a top 10 grade. It's 50/50 that Ryan Ramcyzk from Sconnie goes ahead of him, according to some of the draft guys I've read.

You do realize that this "jump" you are referring to is one man's opinion in a mock that he updates every few days in order to get hits on his site?
Posted on 1/12/17 at 9:32 am to WhoDatTigahsTampa
I would be happy if the Saints draft fell this way. I think Thomas is very comparable to Cam Jordan.

It's the offseason, get use to it. Mcshay and Kiper's opinions/mocks are no better. The difference? They make you pay to see theirs. Everyone who's familiar with Barnett knows he won't be there at 11. This is the first mock that I've seen that actually pencils him in around the area he should be.
Posted on 1/12/17 at 9:50 am to WhoDatTigahsTampa
As much as I don't think the Saints need Leonard Fournette, I would really hate it if he ended up in the division...especially to the Panthers.

That mock is really terrible. Walter is bad about this at this time of year

comments about how terrible a mock is is always more terrible than the mock themselves.
