Defenders must shake their heads everytime they have to line up across Armstead on one on ones... Hasn't lost one yet

Evan Woodbery
No DE Anthony Spencer either. I'll do a count of defensive absences in a second, but it's huge.

Evan Woodbery
Also no sign of LB Ronald Powell, who missed Thursday. CB Brandon Browner also out. Very slim depth on D today.

Evan Woodbery
Also no S Jamarca Sanford. So that's at least 8 defensive players out, not counting Byrd or Tull.

fricking defense man...
Injury bugs in new orleans need to get away. And that goes for Saints and Pels

Good work.
Until people start going on IR I'm not going to concern myself with the injury news.
Also Anthony and Unger for Graham is starting to sound like a steal.

I really think Anthony is gonna be a beast.
There's one thing I've been looking for on defense, and it's a smart, play-making, coverage ILB.
If he can lead the defense, that whole unit can be transformed.

If Unger can stay healthy then yes it's a huge steal. That's an IF though

It isn't like it's constant soft tissue injuries. They were the shite happens type of injuries that can happen to any player.
As for Anthony, it was him or Kendricks or bust for me. Didn't have to be an ILB for me, just one that was good in coverage. I think picking Anthony worked in our favor though as he seems more well rounded. Even better that he was used to calling plays and getting guys lined up.

Yeah I think Anthony will be a stud! A LB that teams will actually fear.

But after watching Evans during camp and at times in the Ravens game you can tell Evans just isn't the same player.
Once again defensive tackle Akiem Hicks blew past Evans during an individual drill Saturday. That's become an all-too regular occurrence at The Greenbrier with Hicks regularly beating Evans.
The right guard was also beat a couple of times against the Ravens and his false start penalty turned third and 11 into third and 16. Pro Football Focus listed Evans as the lowest graded Saints offensive player in the Ravens loss.

Just need him to be average. I just can't believe the drop he had in 1 season from elite to terrible in 2014

I know but just being average seems to be pipe dream right now.

I'm not sure I can recall an elite player of Evans caliber falling off the cliff so fast. It was tough to watch him at times last season & that below average play seems to have carried over into this training camp.
It's not easy to be critical of guy who has been a rock for so long on the O-Line but reality is a bitch. Payton's showing guts standing up for his guy in the media but behind closed doors, he & the staff have to know Evans maybe washed up. I would believe that has to be hard on him as well. He seems to have a soft spot for his long time vets.

He wasn't that good in 2013 either, though he was injured that year too (that's when his back problems started).
I really believe his back just isn't right any more but they're refusing to admit it. That's supported by the fact he can still use his legs to drive forward when run blocking but has struggled mightily while dropping into his pass sets and having the dlineman engage him.

It sucks because both nicks and Evans had the potential and track record to become HOFers. They were the two best guards in the NFL from around 08-11 until Nicks left

That duo was good enough to make average centers and tackles look dynamite. Bushrod got paid, never really lived up to his salary in Chicago. Although Stinchcomb was a career Saint, he had a couple of good years but I wouldn't ever rank him in the top 5 of tackles during the Evans/Nicks tenure. Goodwin didn't really work out in SF, but got paid. I am inclined to think the player we got back was just on the wrong side of the age gap, but he obviously wasn't the individual player we thought he was. DLP was a backup-caliber center, nothing more than that; but the one year he stood in after the Kreutz failure he looked pretty fantastic. If DLP had tried he probably could have gotten more money that year from another team (that's without me knowing the contract situation for him that year). As a matter of fact, I remember an off-season post during the Bountygate off-season with an PFF article saying he was one of the best price-performance deals in the NFL the season prior.
Nicks/Evans just had that ability to affect the guys around them in such a positive way that they emboldened their careers. For those reasons alone I am inclined to agree they were the best Guard duo in the business from 08-11.

Nicks won't have any chance because his dominance didn't extend over enough years. I don't remember what year it was but I will never forget him blowing up both Lance Briggs & Brian Urlacher on the same play on a running play near the goal line. It was one of the most impressive plays I've ever seen from a lineman.
Also in 2011, the NFL Network had some roundtable show that had the theme of a bunch of guys sitting around in a living room talking football. The players as analyst on the show were Warren Sapp, Willie McGinest, Kurt Warner & Micheal Irvin. I can't remember the name of it but on one episode during the second half of that year, Sapp began talking about Evans & Nicks. He said they were easily the best guard tandem in the league & with how Nicks was playing, he would have wanted no part of him if he was still in the league. They showed a few plays from the endzone camera of Nicks just owning guys.
Anyway, I think Evans is a borderline Hall of Famer. I think he eventually gets in but it will take a few tries. Nicks had 1st ballot potential & was on pace to be mentioned with the most devastating guard of all time, John Hannah.
John Hanna was a monster
Carl Nicks aka The Dancing Panda Bear was a beast too

I think it's apparent we need to make a trade for a good G that is someone else's backup. Give up a higher pick than we would have. Just to get someone average.
Evans cannot be the starter. He's done.

yeah, Evans has a shot...but it won't be first ballot like it looked like it would be a few years ago.
Still has 6 Pro Bowls and 4 first team all-pros. Not too bad.
NFL Guards with 4 or more first team all-pros:
John Hannah x7 (1991 - first ballot)
Randall McDaniel x7 (2009)
Bruce Matthews x6 (2007 - first ballot)
Alan Faneca x6 (eligible later this year)
Larry Allen x5 (2013 - first ballot)
Larry Little x5 (1993)
Jahri Evans x4
So not a long list and every one is either in or not eligible yet.

I agree. The fact that Lelito is struggling too makes the situation even worse. They need to find someone who can at least hold their own at one of the guard positions & maybe plug Peat in at the other spot if Lelito continues to struggle.
There's no way the offense will be able to accomplish their goals as a unit having liabilities at both guard positions. They can't afford to have Brees dealing with that type of heat directly in his face again this season.
Brees is going to turnover the ball more than they would like once again if he is not well protected in the pocket. There will be no balance in the run game either without better guard play. 3rd & longs are not were an offense wants to be especially an offense that struggles protecting it's quarterback.

Can we at least win a game before we print the shirts?
