Don't you think that they would have done it if the offer was right?

I'm guessing a lot of teams would have done it in that area. Look at Buffalo. They were competing with themselves for Manuel. Don't you think they would have traded down too? When the 49ers finally traded down with Dallas, all they had to do was give up pick 74. Everybody here was expecting them to part with a 2nd and that obviously wasn't happening.

The only reason the 49ers had to trade up in the first place was because the Saints took Vaccaro. If Vaccaro slid and he and Reid stayed on the board, they could have waited even longer to get the guy they wanted.

Seems pretty logical considering they traded up to take a S only a few spots behind us

Thats a great point. I figured the pick values weren't what they were when they got to 18 from 31 for a third and Miami got to 3 from 12 for only an additional 2nd. That just doesn't seem right.

There was also the chance that the 49ers may have had Vaccaro on top of their draft board as well. If that is so, the Saints could've dealt them the pick that would've gotten them the top rated safety in the draft and may have gotten San Fran's second rounder in the process. I just think the Saints wanted Vaccaro and wasn't going to give him up unless they had gotten a big offer. The 49ers weren't the only suitable trade partner. The Vikings gave up a lot for the 29th pick:

The Patriots received picks in the second (No. 52 overall), third (83), fourth (102) and seventh (229) round.

Also the niners gave up a 3rd rounder. The saints likely wanted no worse than a second rounder. The Niners would have taken Vaccaro. Had the saints added the 2nd rounder they likely would have slid back and taken someone else later. This draft is very safety deep. Cyprien and Sweringer would have been two guys they could have nabbed in round 2.

I don't think the draft discloses the entire deal. I think they just put out the parts of the trade that affect the current draft order. There must have been other bargaining chips that were irrelevant to the draft order. Maybe future picks or players on roster. They disclose this info after the draft is over.

the 49ers were taking reid or no safety. he was the only safety with a 1st round grade on their board

The Vikings were obviously stupid. That's why I hate the Patriots. They always to be in the position where a desperate team needs to move.

The 49ers were not desperate. They are the best team in the NFC and they could live with the 2nd best safety.

The Saints once gave up an entire draft for one player. Yet basically the Dolphins only had to give up a 2nd to do something similar this year. Some teams have shitty GMs. I can remember some teams trading their next year's first round pick to get this year's second round pick. shite happens.

There are other picks that the 49ers could've packaged in there to get Vaccaro. The 49ers are very cap-strapped and have a lot of draft picks. If I had the choice, I'd taken their first to draft the best d-lineman on the board and went after Baccari Rambo with their third. I would assume that the 49ers 2nd third round pick would've been packaged in as well.

I am not doubting you, but after reading so many threads about how Reid is overrated and cannot cover in the NFL, I'd assume that wasn't the case.

Yes he was our highest graded safety. But If for whatever reason we didn't get, we still would have drafted a safety at some point, cmon.

Trade Down With the 49ers

Saints fans. Lets rejoice together, we both got the safety that fit our defense the best.

As an extra, the 49ers completely swindled senile Jerry Jones. Giving up just a third to move up 13 spots in the first round!

And then the cowboys reached hard for a C.

I started the thread using the 49ers as the trade partner as an example of a team which we could trade with. For some reason, a couple of posters were up at arms for even suggesting such a hypothetical. It could've been any team after the Saints that were willing to trade. The Pats don't just luck into a spot that teams want. In fact, their natural draft positions tend to be pretty poor because of their consistent winning record. They just have a GM and HC who are the best at manipulating the draft.

Second worst pick after the Bill's choice of EJ Manuel.

I agree and disagree. They always wind up in that position where that guy who slid a bunch of spots winds up, or you have a team with a lot of ammunition and only one guy left with a first round grade at the end of the first round.

It's easier to trade out of the end of the first round. The teams at the top of the round NEED the pick. The teams at the end of the round don't really need the guy who's there when they pick because they're already good. So you get a chance to fleece the team that "needs" that final piece to their puzzle.

Man, if we could have flip flopped with the Jets at 13 (with Ivory as collateral) we would have taken Star and none of this would even be up for discussion.

When you start the night with 13 draft picks, you have the luxury of taking risks. Harbough liked Reid, thought he fit their system and went up and took him. SF did nothing but get better defensively last night and he addressed a need....

If Saints Talk was in charge of the Saints front office, this would be what our war room would look like.

Also, the Patriots are smarter than the average team. But you also have to realize that if instead of stockpiling pick after pick after pick after pick after pick, they picked some competent DBs in the first round and a WR that can stretch the field, they might have won as many Super Bowls as the Steelers right now.
