THOMAS MORSTEAD Scouting Reports, Notes, Updates

One of college football's hidden gems, Morstead might not have gotten the media attention of other kicking specialists, but professional teams are certainly aware of his ability. Few specialists have the ability to be equally effective in multiple roles, but the SMU Mustang has proven that no task is too daunting.
Morstead did not begin kicking for the Mustangs until the 2006 season, but he ranks fifth in school history with 217 points scored, just behind some of the program's elite players in football annals - Doak Walker, Eric Dickerson, Eddie Garcia and Reggie Dupard. His 78 consecutive extra points made set a school record and his 2007 extra point percentage of 100.0 is a Conference USA mark. He ranks second on the league single-game record chart with a 55.6-yard average punting vs. North Texas in 2007 and his 43.4-yard career average is good for third in C-USA annals.

Strengths:
Prototypical size...A pretty good athlete...Technically sound...Good hands...Outstanding leg strength...Great hang time...Gets excellent leverage...Never had an attempt blocked...Can kick field goals in a pinch...Could potentially kick off...Hard worker...Intelligent...Leader.
Weaknesses:
Didn't face a lot of pressure situations...Leg is so strong he'll out-kick his coverage at times...Has some work to do when it comes to kickoffs.
Notes:
Career average is the fourth best in school history...Connected on 37 of 53 field goal attempts (70%) and went 106 for 108 on extra points for the Mustangs...Named 2nd Team All-Conference USA in 2006 and 1st Team in 2007...Led Conference USA and ranked 9th in the nation with a 44.6-yard average as a junior...Very good prospect who played his entire college career in relative obscurity...Has the physical tools and superb intangibles to be drafted and earn a starting job in the NFL.

invited to combine-
Morstead is a three-year starter, and twice all-Conference USA, as both the Mustangs' kicker and punter. Named honorable mention as a senior because of his 41.8-yard average, down from 44.6 as a junior. However, his 59 punts downed inside the 20-yard line -- as compared to only 10 touchbacks -- over the last three years makes scouts wonder if he could be a legitimate field-position weapon. Had an arm span of 32 inches and a hand span of 9 inches at the combine.

4th best avg in SMU history! Certainly worthy of trading up for! Sean Payton and M.Loomis should be Did Pakalak (sp) not do a good job when he came on board? These morons draft like we are SB champs and can draft guys at a whim. Welcome to the 3rd year in a row of non playoffs.

blueslover, I know you are a die hard Saints fan, as am I, but please don't defend this pick. We have far greater needs with good talent left on the board. Jesus! I feel like an Oakland Raiders fan.

The Bobby Hebert, "we need a big back for HEAT Evans to block for", crowd dont care about whether or not he can play.

Holy Moley! This is unreal. I know that this guy isn't a popular pick right now, but taking a punter like this can really help your defense. Every time you can pin your opponent deep, you give your defense a big advantage.

I'm not defending it, don't particuliarly like it. But he is the pick and I like knowing about them. Just passing the info along.

I would love to defend this pick but frick man come on a punter when we can actually get an athlete. Jesus Christ I don't care how good he is any kind of draft pick used on a kicker or punter is a wasted pick IMO

ESPN decided it was time to give lip service to the 'punter is a weapon' coachspeak, but I really don't think anyone believes it was a good pick.

Yeah cause they definately held back what they really thought about the Raiders picks

Did some of y'all even watch the saints last season? Weatherford got cut because he couldn't pin teams inside the 20. I've personally met Pachulak and he's a great individual. I'll certainly be rooting for him to beat out this rookie, but common sense dictates that if you can find a punter who can pin a team down inside the 20 and your net loss will be a 7th rounder, you do it.

It's just a bunch of disgruntled unemployed NFL scouts. They can't help but complain because they have deeper insight than these guys- especially the Cowboys, Bengals, Patriots, and Saints who drafted specialists.
