He's a good college player. Not a starting safety. Big hitter and plays with a lot of heart. Not the best athlete though.

To be clear, both Payton and Loomis said they waited all the way through their 1st round selection and had NO calls for trade downs. They could be lying, but I don't see any reason why they would.

I do not necessarily have anything against the way they draft, it is more just about who they draft. I have nothing but faith in the current regime (the Ireland era, I mean) considering how well the 2015 and now the 2016 drafts have seemingly gone. I am absolutely behind the strategy of "go up and get your guys" - as long as you're sure they're your guys and you're super confident in them. In the pre-Ireland era they did this unsuccessfully pretty often. If we truly have reached a stage where we can really identify good guys for our scheme, which is how it appears, then this is fine.

Trading is actually a pretty dumb idea that no one actually uses because team executives are a lot smarter than fans who go "MORE PICKS = MORE WINS"

It's a matter of strategy and philosophy.

The strengths:

You acquire more picks to have more darts.

Or

You trade up to acquire particular players.

Where these strategy are weak:

Trading back means you are getting less valuable picks as the talent pool decreases the further back you go. It's also harder to target certain players as when you trade back you don't know who will be taken between where you were and where you went.

Trading up means getting fewer darts. Even the best scouts aren't always right and there are so many factors that can make even surefire picks go wrong.

Neither is inherently right or wrong and the best strategy usually lies somewhere between. Being flexible is always best. Sometimes you go get your man and sometimes you see nothing of equal value where you are picking.

It's just that with the Saints they always seem to see their man and want to go get him. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
