My only issue with it was trading up into the 2nd and taking a player who will be a backup for us when we have needs at starting positions.

Vonn Bell is going to get a ton of playing time, especially with the way Byrd has been the past few seasons.

In the modern NFL Bell will get starter minutes. If either Byrd or KV get hurt he is a starter. If both are healthly he will spell both FS/SS as first reserve and will play NB or sub for KV at SS while KV goes to NB in Nickel, Dime, or any formation that requires at least 5 DB's.

KV is no longer under contract after 2017 and Byrd is no lock for the 2017 team.

If we would have drafted Tunsil, I would have been pissed.

Loomis and the FO liked only a handful of Guards in this draft. They had their eyes on a few but believe the teams who drafted them reached to fill a need.

I loved our first 4 picks, although I don't know if we needed to trade up for the DT, seems we could have sat still and landed him. Although Loomis made comment he felt like he wouldn't make it to the Saints pick. I'll admit, I don't know anything about him except what has come out since we drafted him. The other first 3 picks I know, and really liked the picks.

Sheldon Ranking was a great pick to start off the draft.

They should have picked up Jarran Reed in the second round.

Vonn Bell will be good for the Saints but they didn't have to trade up to get him IMO. He would have been available at the #3 spot for them. If not...then they could have taken the best player on their board.

And trading up for the Nigerian...worst move of the day.

Many analysts were surprised Bell didn't get picked before the Saints traded up and got him. Doubt he would have made it to the Saints if they stayed where they were at.

I don't disagree with that, but again, I think you could have found your reserve safety from a large pool of camp castaways that would have been every bit as good as Bell. At least it would have been easier to do this than find a starting guard that's better tha Jahri and Lelito. JMO

I'd almost rather see us reach for a player and keep the additional pick than trade up so much, but that's just me.

It's hard not to like this draft. It's one of the better drafts we have had over the past 7 or 8 years. Yet some people are still bitching. I'm convinced those people would complain even if we took the players they are advocating for now.

I still think 2015 was our best draft

quote:

We got a great DT which we needed. We needed a WR (it's not a luxury, we needed a damn WR) and got one the coaches liked. Byrd will be gone next year, so we got his replacement this year. We took a gamble on an athletic freak of a DE which we need. At that late in the draft, it's worth the risk. And Lasco will replace Sunsari and Murphy and can be a backup to Spiller when he's injured. Oh yeah, and he's a damn 7th rounder. Not a bad pick either.

Agree on DT and WR. I don't think Byrd is going anywhere, honestly I think he will play out his contract. Lasco, I think he will be one of those mystery rookie IR candidates.

The people moaning and complaining are miserable know-it-alls who find it easier to complain and criticize than be patient and let things play out. They would have complained and started 20 threads about us picking Deuce McCallister when we already had Ricky Williams on the team. But that seemed to work out ok for us in the end.

my main thing is that it is a systematic problem which has proven to be a failure over a 10 year span, yet they still continue to do it.

It would be like in a real game, if Sean Payton continuously gave the ball to the FB on 3rd and short, time and time again, and he kept getting stuffed. Yea, maybe he'll get the 1st down one time out of 10, but it doesn't mean its the right move.

True. It tends to spiral too. This year for example. Do we need to give away more picks to trade up for the Canadian DT if we still had a 4th rounder to draft him with earlier?

The world may never know.

and trade away picks when we have no depth

that's what I keep saying. This draft really needed a volume of picks to help change this team. As a result, they didn't get much better this weekend

Have you even looked at the roster. They have a ton of depth and in no way is a players production in college 100% proof they will be successful in the pros.

We lost one pick, and traded up to get a much better overall prospect. Can we stop pretending like we traded away our entire draft for 1-2 players.

Payton is a good coach but that doesn't mean we like everything about the team. After ten years I am resigned that McMahon and Bill Johnson will not be leaving and that we may never see a trade down and continued trades up with this FO.
