That gutsy call rallied us to win.

Ambush, pt. 2.

What happened at the start of 2nd half? I missed the first 3 minutes. Got back and Panthers had the ball in great field position. TIA

We had a 3 & out.

On first down we got 7 yards, but there was a defensive penalty.

Instead of accepting (and getting an automatic first down, but only 5 yards instead of 7), CSP declined it so we had 2nd & 3. We failed to convert on 2nd and 3rd so we punted.

I don't mind the call. 3 plays to get 10 yards at the expense of of 3 yards. Or 2 plays to get 3 yards. It was a favorable 2nd down. We just didn't execute.

Not 3 to get 5. It was a 5 yard penalty with automatic first Down. And Brees talked him into the wrong decision.

Option was 2nd and 3
Or
1st and 10, 2 yards back.

No brainer. Take the 1st and 10

announcers were thinking 1st and 5

why would you not take a 7 yard gain on a first down play? 2nd and 3 > 1st and 10

It was a weird call imo. Hoping Payton addresses at some point this week. Just curious to see hear his thought process on the matter.

It was defensive holding. Auto first.

The announcers got it wrong. It would not have been 1st and 5. With that said, taking the 2nd and 3 over the 1st and 10 (+5), IMO, was the wrong decision and I would be wiling to bet the ref explained something wrong to CSP. That is not an excuse for not knowing the correct call, though.

2nd and 3 puts you 2 yards further down the field than the previous 5 yard penalty correct? So they you are pretty much taking a 7 yd first down play, 2 plays should get 3 yards... them shitting the bed on those plays made this a bad call.

They get the first, and we probably aren't discussing it as much.

pure assumption, we would have been in a longer 3rd down situation

How is it a no brainer?

2 yards further downfield, and we have 2 plays to get 3 yards which is better than 3 plays to get 10 yards.

Take the 1st down and matriculate down the field. One penalty at a time if need be.

Certainly made worse by two crappy plays on 2nd and 3rd.

I think Payton's logic behind the call is that we'd been unbalanced towards the pass (as usual) and 2nd and 3 is a favorable running down, so he kept the play

then we ran on 2nd and 3 and lost like half a yard so it didn't work out
