The best part about having a historically bad defense last year....

Yeah, the obvious answer is that we can't get any worse. But as a result of that fact, coupled with the fact that we had no head coach last year, it makes every defensive player we sign unbelievably exciting.
I'm not sure if it's because it's a combo of knowing we can't get worse, and the fact that with a new system we will have so much room for competition. Or, that ALL of our draft picks, and even some UDFAS like Thomas and Reddick (hell, even a guy like Ray Shipman from the thread goatmilker posted today) seem like quality players that can have an if not immediate, definite future impact. Can't remember being this excited about a draft since Reggie. The one thing they both had in common, is that Sean Payton was just showing up for work.....

Brees and Payton need to visit Seymour at his home and try to convince him to take a vet minimum deal.

I'm just glad we've brought in competition at each position. I'm hoping Ryan doesn't give preference to these old, under performing veterans.

I don't understand why everyone keeps saying we can't get worse....umm sure we can we just give up more yards and points than last year. I mean its breaking our own record, but we would still be worse.

I think that is a very fair projection.
I further think that if this defense improves to just mediocre, they will be Super Bowl contenders.
That early out-of-sync Saints offense still scored 35 points against Washington (more than should be asked of an offense to win a game) but yet that abomination of a defense allowed the Skins to score 40 and gain 459 yards.
Had the defense just been mediocre, and say held the Skins to just 24, it would have looked like a blowout win, and that's with an out-of-sync offense.
Now add in a re-charged/re-focused Sean Payton overseeing the offensive gameplans, upgrades to WR & OT depth, and it's not hard to imagine a mediocre defense (that can get the ball back to Brees & his weapons) will have the Saints deep in the playoffs.
If this defense surprises and plays like a Top Ten defense, hell, they might as well etch Who Dat on the Lombardi Trophy.

I'm fine with fully embracing how bad we were last year. Makes me look forward to this year that much more.

the Saints actually were in the top 16 in takeaways last year.
#12 to be exact.
- also finished with 30 sacks in 2012. That ranking was pretty low but just to give you idea of what we've come up with here over the past few years:
2009- 35 sacks (tied for #13 in the league)
2010- 33 sacks (tied for #18 in the league)
2011- 33 sacks (tied for #19 in the league)
2012- 30 sacks (tied for #25 in the league)

This is technically true. However, we could give up more yards YET show sounder fundamentals. I'll chalk that up to a win.

I don't think that's going to happen with him. With Payton I would be worried about it, but I'm hopeful that a year off has allowed him to have a more objective approach about everyone's abilities.

I was looking back on this and noticed something interesting:

"New Orleans pulled it together somewhat during Weeks 12-15, holding four straight opponents to fewer than 400 yards. However, the Saints loss three of those contests to all but eliminate them from playoff contention."
We gave up close to 400 to the Giants, to go with 6 offensive tds so that's slightly skewed, but the D held well against SF, Atl, and TB. The offense definitely cost us the SF and Atl games(along with the Den game earlier in the year; 1 for 12 on 3rd down). The D seemed to purposely tank that last Carolina game.
Despite having the worst D ever(yardage wise which doesn't amount to much since it's points that matter; we did do poorly there however), I think having Payton for a few of those games where the offense struggled could have helped tremendously.
Through the offensive and defensive struggles we still finished 7-9 with 3 dud offensive games and 1 tanked defensive game. I think with Payton that's at least a 4 game swing.
So with Payton back and a defensive scheme more suited to our players, I think we have great potential heading into the year. 13-3?
