After a few days mulling over all that has been happening, I see what they are doing (I think) and am completely on board. What were the three main problems last year? Lack of talent, strong veteran leadership and maturity. Shift to this off season and major splashes have been made. We have traded our first in Saints history elite skill player to the NFC champions (the same ones that we have yet to best and most certainly will have to in order to hold the crystal again) for a Center that is known to not only be one of the best and smartest at his position but also an incredible locker room presence. We also received a 1st round pick in that deal. In losing that elite talent, we also eliminated one of the maturity problems on the team.

Talent. Leadership. Maturity.

The other moves all lend credence to this shift. While we did lose a strong locker room presence in Lofton, we also got rid of poor talent with that move. We signed Browner, a 30yo CB who is known as a strong presence in the locker room. He improves our talent at the greatest position of need, and he brings in more veteran leadership. We are trying to trade Stills. Yes this would be a talent decrease, but it tells me that he may very well be another of the maturity issues on this team. Rumors are swirling that we may be trying to trade for Phily's guard who was rated 2nd at the position last year. He is 33. Again, if this is true, then another example of strong veteran presence that is talented.

We have been reported by multiple sources to be open to trading any player on our team not named Brees or Cooks. This is a clear sign that they have a plan to rebuild this team into a new image. They are banking a lot on stockpiling draft pick while signing older veterans. I think it's a great move, because they can now focus on drafting higher character players in this year's draft that can be groomed into the team by the veteran leaders we are bringing in. They are admitting their past mistakes with these moves, and they are attempting to fix them.

The biggest problems we have had with previous coaches has been stubbornness. Hasslett, Ditka, Mora... all of them would make mistakes, and none of them would admit to them or attempt to fix them. They just kept on forcing those mistakes down our throats. Paeyton is owning up to the mistakes he has made, and he is showing great character in addressing them.

Will it work? We shall see. We have been quite bad as of late with drafting good players, and a lot is being banked on this year's draft. We have a new scouting department though, and that could change all of this. If we draft poorly again and all of this fails us in 3 years when we have no young talent ready to replace the vets, then we know it was a failure. But I commend them for at least trying and for doing bold moves to do so.

You have to get things right. You basically have this offseason and next. After that, you won't have enough time to fix the roster before Brees is on his way out. So I think that adding veterans is not a bad idea right now. Getting guys who know how to win like Browner and Unger is a smart move. We've lacked leadership, and we want our young guys to be around veterans who know how to win. And this won't come back to bite us, because all we've done is get rid of bloated contracts. The contracts we've signed are not small, but none are bloated like Graham's, Grubbs, or Loftons. Saints offseason moves needed to happen. We'd been putting it off for too long.

You can't say the FO and coaching staff are not being bold. They made some horrible choices last year that I hope are not carried over into next year.

My biggest gripe with Loomis is that it took too long to make some much needed changes in a poor scouting dept..

Fixing the scouting department will prove to be the biggest thing off the off season I think. Part of the reason we got in this mess was consistently missing on FA and draft picks

this is exactly it. the other issue is that young guys we currently have/had are immature brats. character is something that is too often overlooked by teams and fans, and here we sit seeing how bad character can bite you in the arse. the guys they are bringing in will bring with them that locker room enforcer presence that we have lost. they will get the new youth along with our carryover to step in line and be men, not entitlement brats.

this is so true. last year's draft was horrendous! we cut most players from it, and so far only Cooks is our one legit player. Sunseri may become one, but that's it. Past drafts have been poor too. It's a shame that it took them this long to see there mistakes and correct them, but at least they have.

This year and next year are huge.

If we swing and miss we will most likely be without Brees, Payton and Loomis

These are moves that can make you look like a genius and win you a SB. But they are also moves that can be hard to answer to and can get you fired

Great post and spot on.

IMHO, this sets us up to not only compete now, but have the veteran presence to groom some of the younger players into the veteran presence down the road.

Regardless of the idiot Rantards invading ST lately, you give me Drew Brees with a solid O-Line and quality running game, I like my chances no matter who is on the outside catching the ball.

truth. let's not forget we have Cooks though, so there is quality WR catching it too. Maybe even elite

I think I'm going to start a Twitter account called NFL_Truth and start tweeting out absurd stuff to see if I can get any of the National Media to start regurgitating it.

Local beat reporter in Tampa says the Saints want to trade Drew Brees to the Bucs? Obviously trading a future HOF'er to a division rival makes total sense.
