It looks like it may be converted to a signing bonus. This would clear up around 4 million in cap space this year. Malcolm Butler, come on down.

We had $15.5 mil (or a little more) already. Didn't need to clear space.
Some of these conversions are automatic and written to happen on X day of the league year (usually 1st-5th day).
But with cap rollover it basically means nothing as we can carry forward what we don't use. The only thing it does is make the player harder to cut (very slightly in this case) in future years.

Yeah with that news coming on Friday(?) it seems the other scenario (blew him away with a deal so we didn't need to meet) seems very unlikely.
My guess is his asking price was too high. Word is he wants Kuechly money.

It might not be an ask thing like being reported. Some of these are automatic.
But you are right in that we don't need the extra space now, but it can always roll over. Just makes Armstead a teency bit harder to cut down the line (adding $1 mil to each of the next 4 years).
