Should the draft precede free agency?

It’s a point we’ve made from time to time in recent months, and it becomes relevant again in the aftermath of the annulled marriage between the Saints and running back Adrian Peterson. Should the NFL draft precede free agency?
The Bears, for example, wouldn’t have offered quarterback Mike Glennon a three-year, $45 million contract if they’d already drafted Mitch Trubisky. And the Saints surely wouldn’t have signed running back Adrian Peterson if they’d already drafted Alvin Kamara.
“[I]n our league you have free agency and then you have the NFL draft unlike basketball, where it is the other way around,” Saints coach Sean Payton told reporters on Wednesday. “We drafted [Kamara] and ended up finding a good, young prospect who has played well.”
It’s possible that the Saints would have still signed Peterson after the draft, as a hedge against Kamara not becoming the guy that he has become. Still, Payton seems to be interested in at least considering a possible shift in the order of free agency and the draft.
“I think it makes sense because you’re always trying to draft value,” Payton said. “To be able to do that and then finish the process possibly and sign. It’s just flipped around. . . . I’m sure there’s a lot more that goes into it than me just talking about it with you guys on a conference call. It’s not been something that I’ve been looking to bring up, raise issue with or any of those things. I’m sure that it’s fairly complex.”
It is, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be raised. Some would say that it would result in veterans getting less in free agency, since needs would be filled via the draft. But teams only have seven draft picks; for needs not filled in the draft, the price tag in free agency could increase. Likewise, players due to become free agents could squeeze their current teams for more money if they didn’t draft a rookie who can step in and replace them.
Regardless of the details, the current system often results in teams filling a need twice, and then having a problem. Flipping the order could prevent that, which likely will be good for everyone, regardless of how the dollars and cents eventually work out in a salary-capped/minimum-spend environment.

No. If there's a quality free agent available, you go after him. You never know how these drafts fall out and whether or not you're getting a certified starting player.

I don't think veteran players and the NFLPA would be in favor of it.
They want to get their money first.

It seems we have missed just as often in FA as the draft.

No doubt. They'd push back hard against this.

the way i see it is as soon as the super bowl is over then the season is officially over and free agency should begin 8 am the next morning.
its far more likely FA affects who you draft then who you draft affects the FA you sign
AP being a redundant player we didnt need after the draft was just a thing that happens sometimes, there is no solution needed for that because it isnt a problem.
the saints could have traded him before the season began if they wanted to so as i said, it isnt a problem.

That's a two way street. If the draft is first, it might give clarity to free agency. If Free Agency is first, it might give clarity to the draft.

quote:this is the exact reason nothing should change. Glennon wasn't a 15 million dollar QB before that deal. Chicago knew they wanted to draft a QB...they tricked themselves. Let those teams keep sabatoging their own seasons and money.

Do they have a say in the matter?
Not saying that to be a dick. I genuinely don't know

Chicago made the move believing any qb they draft would be allowed to sit.
Free agency comes after they still sign Glennon, maybe not as much. At the same time, a team needs a DE and can't draft one are likely to spend more afterwards.
It goes both way, honestly does not matter. Nfl has so much turnover, positions, and injury.

I disagree with this. Experienced starters will have always value in the league. You can't count on draft picks outside of the first few rounds to come in and be every down contributors.

I actually like this idea. Maybe not the very next AM, but maybe by the next Monday.
And move the draft up to March. Give the news guys more than just 2-3 months with their news teams.

Most schools don't let out until the end of April/beginning of May, so even if you move the draft up they can't practice until sometime in May.

While they can't practice they could get playbook, start talking with coaches/other players, etc.

To be completely honest, if you don't have an idea of who you wanna sign in Free Agency and who you wanna draft, that's your issue.

absolutely.

No. Ideally, you want to go BPA in the draft, so you try to fill holes in FA. The Saints scenario is more the nature of the RB position. Kamara happens to be ready to contribute right away. That doesn't always happen at other positions.

IDK but if Devin White keeps playing the way he is playing it will be hard to pass on him
