Seems every year they try to get this defense together and every year...

there is just a major setback. Injuries are just nuts with this defense. Offense has just always been what it's been and the defense is just always fighting something. Back luck? Karma?

Even if healthy, this defense has been horrible.

Whatever, the offense needs to put up big points early to give the D an advantage. That's what we did in a host of games in 09. The offense hasn't moved the ball as consistently from drive to drive in recent years.
Still, I don't have high hopes for the season
Byrd
Spiller
Gillette
SJB
It's clear we have a lot of people with no clue as to what they're doing

Can you see into the future?

It's obvious that the defense is not what we were expecting. After all, they were the 28th ranked defense through the preseason.

With our entire secondary out for a good bit of that.
Our run defense was very encouraging. Last year we were giving up 6 ypc down the stretch. Didn't we finish #1 against the run this preseason?
I think missed tackles will be the key

The starting defense have very limited field time together, and when they did (against the Pats), they looked decent.
I also don't know what "we were expecting" comes from. Expectations were low for the defense.
And please don't throw a preseason ranking. That's meaningless.
From what I can glean from the limited time I saw the starters together:
-the run defense is stout
-they don't give up over the top stuff (probably the lone exception was Lewis against the Texans, but he had surgery right after that, so it makes sense why he didn't look like himself)
-the pass rush needs work and might not come alive until later in the year when the young guys get more acclimated to the game.
Truth is we really don't know, and we won't until they have a couple of games under their belt.

as long as we don't get gashed in the run game on defense, I won't mind much.
nothing worse than watching a team get 5,6,7,8 yards on early downs or to close out a game.
secondary is not totally healthy so I'm not expecting much from them the first few games.
hoping to be pleasantly surprised with a few turnovers and perhaps... just a little bit of good luck.
we are allowed some right?

The good news is we face some bad o-lines until we face the Cowboys. That might get ugly. If we can generate a pass rush on them they'll kill us.

I thought the sarcasm was obvious, but considering how several posters are on this board I can understand the oversight.

yeah, Cowboys have a beast line.
but I really think them losing Murray is going to make a difference.
the Sunday night game with them might be a real barn burner. I doubt their defense will really do much to stop our offense.
big thing for us on defense is how quickly Anthony and Kikaha come along. Just looking for some impact plays here and there hopefully.

This has me worried because in the past when that was the case the secondary would basically play not to get beat deep. So, they would play the CBs 7+ yards off WRs & the safetys would be 20+ yds deep and allow quick passes thus negating any pass rush.

yeah, its a tough spot to be in.
I thought this year they were going to play closer to the LOS with Browner and Lewis.
but we'll have to wait with Lewis.
should be interesting to see how Vaccaro is used too. Strange cause he roamed around and made more of a difference as a rookie but last year wasn't close to being the same player like his rookie year.

They probably will still play close to the line with Browner and Breaux. If anything happens to them you could see that change.

most of the defense has barely played together
some of you are insufferable

I understand injuries happen but I really think our medical staff is very poor. There are no excuses for the Byrd and Spiller situations.

Defense is a cluster frick. Im hoping that we' can get our starters back soon and are able to at least hold them to field goals.
Posted on 9/9/15 at 6:14 pm to Patrick O Rly
We were missing every starter in the secondary vs. the Pats, as well as Ellerbe who was working ahead of Hawthorne in the first game.
So we've never seen all of our starters together in any preseason game. And we might not for half of the season.

We're about to see what the defense can do in real games and the excuses have to stop at some point. If they keep losing starters to injuries or because they're jackasses, you have do a better job of getting capable backups.
Injuries or not, Ryan won't make the season if the defense plays like last year.
Let's hope everything gets on track.

True that. You can't win games giving up 5-6 YPC. It puts too much pressure on the offense to be perfect and isn't sustainable. The hope I have on D so far appears to be from improvement in that area. We're thin up front though
