I always thought Gregg William's defensive scheme was kind of stupid, but it did lead to a lot more turnovers than what we are currently getting. It kind of shows that the turnovers correlate with the wins as well.

It also very clearly cost us a home field NFC Championship game.

Look, man, I'll always remember what he did for us to get us to and win the Super Bowl. And while the record speaks for itself...man...there were a lot of games we honestly should have lost because of his end game play calling. in 2011 I remember a good 3-5 games like that. And then it finally bit us in San Fran in that playoff game.

That's what you get when you blitz 90% of the time. High risk, high reward type of deal.

A 4-2 playoff record is a lot of reward when you throw in a super bowl win.

and that's just 3 years with the defense.

Williams had good talent - Ryan has the least talented defense in the NFC

Yeah we bumbled around for the entire first half of that game. Horrible luck on the PT fumble at the goal line opening drive (would have easily been a personal foul penalty today, BTW).

the offense gave us the lead regardless of turnovers. The defensive scheme to end that game was terrible.

Greer
Sharper

were the two additions from a garbage Gary Gibbs D. In fact, 3G took Anthony Hargrove and made him a big time contributor.

3G had to have CBs signed off the street due to injury, the linebackers were the same as 2008 (he had Scott freaking shanle), the d line was unchanged, there were injuries all over the place. Ryan made a top safety in Byrd look like complete garbage (before he was injured in perpetuity) he had a #1 pick at safety, signed Brandon browner, cam Jordan, etc.

we've had 4 coordinators working with similar level talent (3 working with the same talent period) and only one of them got the job done. And getting that job done had us as annual SB contenders.

That's really interesting but obviously there are a ton of mitigating factors... chief among them is that back in the GW days our offense was so goddamned unstoppable that everyone we played was desperately trying to keep up with us and playing high risk/high reward offense.

Also important to keep in mind that those three Williams seasons coincided with Brees hitting his prime.

Since Brees turned 30 (in 2009 -- same season Williams came on board), he's had a record of 62-34. Not too bad.

After he cans Ryan he'll be on his 5th D coordinator going into his 10th season

You'd think he'd notice that it ain't the coordinator but the shitty drafts and signings he and the GM assembled over the years.

What was the Saints' record and turnover margin in the games that Darren Sharper played?

Williams + Sharper = 2009
Williams - Sharper = 2012

Like many coaches you have a window that closes. We got Gregg when his window was open.
Its all about reinvention in the NFL I think. People get on to your schemes whether on D or O.
I refuse to blame our current offence on just the players.

So Sean Payton with an average defensive coordinator is almost unstoppable. Thanks, we pretty much knew that already.
