Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed C.J. Spiller was a healthy scratch Week 1.

Payton said Spiller was sat because Travaris Cadet was going to have a bigger role on offense and rookie Daniel Lasco is a bigger contributor on special teams. With both facts unlikely to change in the near future, Spiller could find himself in street clothes often this season. Spiller is not worth holding in any formats
Excellent Loomising continues.

Holy shite, all I can do is laugh.

Loomis

ETA: worth discussing in thread also is the signing of Coby Fleener. He hasn't done shite in the preseason and didn't yesterday either. I forget that he's on the team sometimes.

what i dont understand, is if you're going to play Cadet as the 4th WR, and not really play Coleman at all, why not deactivate Coleman and let Spiller return kicks or take some reps at RB? just stupid to me

Did anyone on here actually expect him to have a bigger role this year?

I bet all the same people thought Les Miles was going to air it out this season.

I honestly don't know that I've seen Spiller return punts/kicks in a Saints uniform. I haven't seen him do much in a Saints uniform, honestly.

What does Cadet do that is so much better than what Spiller does?

App State, I think.

To answer the other question, I think Payton likes Cadet's skill set and reliability over Spiller's.

In spirit I agree, but if Thomas goes down (knock on wood) they want another big body in there.

I personally think the body type separation is outdated but teams still hold to it.

Yup he is way more receiver than runner (and his 1(?) run showed why). He is effectively our 4th WR (with a small threat of running).

Spiller can catch no doubt, but he is more runner and I don't think he has a receiver route tree like Cadet.

I do think we should try Spiller over Murphy on returns.

Lasco plays ST coverage which is rare for HBs. He's more like a LB STer in that sense.

Because NO ONE returns kicks worth a shite in a Greg McMahon-led special teams unit.

Do you people think Loomis is evaluating personnel. Sean and co tell him what they want and he makes it work.

I have a hard time believing Spiller can't do everything Cadet can do but better. He's faster, supposedly has good hands and he definitely has a much faster burst. I think this might be one of those players Payton just doesn't like. Probably sneezed on him in practice and is now in the doghouse permanently. What a waste of money.

It's not like Cadet's routes are especially complicated either.

Another wasted signing, either he did something to piss someone off or this front office is incapable of doing anything right.
