It's just his opinion. I'm sure there are ppl somewhere that think we didn't do so well. Definitely too early too tell but his job is to speak on things like this and give his opinion.

I liked the Browner pick up because he should bring a tougher attitude to the secondary.

The Browner signing is far more important than anything done in the entire offseason. Having Browner will allow the defense to play a lot of man on the outside along with Lewis. If he can stay healthy, this is going to allow Byrd to freelance some & be the ballhawk he has been throughout his career.

The pass rush should also be much improved. That added pressure should provide some forced throws leading to picks. Hopefully Kikaha can provide a few of those sack fumbles that is known for. All in all, the defense is set up to force more turnovers if many of our guys can stay healthy. Up until seeing this, I had actually forgotten how many injuries the team had on the defensive side of the ball last year.

With all of the Super Bowl talk last off-season, I'm not going to get excited over anything until the games start.

I'm going into this season thinking we need one more off-season like we just had to make one more run. I just don't think we are there yet. All these changes and we are in the middle of an identity change. We are going to be running the ball a lot (supposedly) and try to be defensive oriented and keep them off the field and have them rested. I don't know how that's going to turn out...Payton isn't used to it and neither are we.

Until I see what we are like on the field, I will remain guarded.

Well, then you are an idiot, cause getting 2 starters is addition by subtraction. A Mike LB and center are more important positions than a TE.

That isn't what the term means.

Addition by subtraction implies that we're better off for not having him on the team without compensation.

Adding 2 starters is just addition. Addition by subtraction means that you view him as a liability

We have the best QB in the division. By that alone we should be favorites. I like being the dark horse and sneaking up on people.

I can see a reasonable argument that the Panthers should be favorites since they won the division back to back years. They also looked damn good at the end of the year when their oline gelled

This. They have an adequate (above average?) QB and a GREAT DEFENSE. Also a good OL which may improve and up and comming WRs and a Very good TE. They could use some youth at RB (not sure who they drafted, if any).

This Division is a toss-up, with Tampa on the outside looking in.

Atlanta had a good draft I guess but besides Julio Jones and Matt Ryan they don't have much on offense. Roddy White is old. I guess their defense will be better under Quinn but who do they have that can rush the passer well?

Just wait. He wears #44 and he's coming...

Your opinion on Browner is different than mine. I hope you are right.

Here's a quote from Joe Vitt immediately after the draft.

quote:

“Sacks do not equate to victories, pressures do,” Vitt said. “We’re looking for a guy that’s obviously got athleticism with the physical attributes, but tenacity is what gets sacks in the National Football League. There’s so many three- and five-step drops by a quarterback, if you can get a quarterback to reset and stay after your opponent, you get the sacks on the reset. So tenacity is critical.”

If you read into that quote especially the highlighted part, he's emphasizing that being able to lock down receivers on quick designed passing plays is important. Those offensive plays are designed to get the ball out of the quarterbacks hand before the pass rush gets there.

Jabri Greer was quoted in an article with Jeff Triplett last offseason saying that in the Saints system, that the corners have the option in man coverage to play press or off man. It was just a matter of what they were more comfortable playing. Too many times we saw P-Rob or Corey White play off man. Not only did they choose to play off man, they immediately would begin back peddling at the snap of the ball. They gave up way too many easy underneath routes. Browner isn't going to settle back into off man. He's going to be there pressing along with Keenan Lewis. As long as they can keep receivers covered when the opposing quarterback makes his first read, it will allow the pass rush to get there or force the quarterback into making bad throws.

Good god I've been trying to hammer this point home about our lack of pass rush for MONTHS.

It wasn't the pass rushers not getting pressure, it was the CBs and LBs (we gave up by far the most yards to HBs) giving up way too many quick passes. Yes it would have helped if we had more speed rushers like Galette but you cannot blame the other linemen for what happened. That's all on PRob and White.

Bet you fapped when ESPN reported about Anthony pulling down an interception his first day at OTA's

I'll say this. It was more than just money that we let Lofton go (and Payton said as much). He seemed to have regressed in coverage last year and he was already poor at it. I don't know how many times I yelled at the tv because he gave up the quick pass to a back and then let them run 10 more yards (also yelled at White and PRob doing the same thing on the outside).

So yeah I was more than just excited to hear Anthony is doing work in coverage already.

How is it everyone always forgets bout CJ Spiller when talking about great off-season moves??

He will be GREAT for us! We were missing the Reggie/Sproles back last year. We have that back now, plus some.

Payton has been gushing about CJ too. I expect big things from him playing on turf for more than half the year--he's going to bring that homerun ability we've been missing.
