Per Schefter.
Formally of the Chargers.
Makes sense if the rookie isn't able to start right away you slide out Peat to left tackle.
Also I didn't see it mentioned but in his press conference yesterday Payton said he expects Armstead back at some point this year.

Didn't they up the number of players that can come back off of IR to two this year?
If he isn't placed on IR it will telling on how quickly they expect him to come back. Unless he's already been placed on IR and I missed it.

I've been pretty heavily favoring if Peat is going to be your LG then you need to put him there and stop all this moving him around the line stuff. In this case though, if Armstead is going to miss a long period of time, I disagree with myself. The best way to still put a good offensive line out there is to move Peat over and plug someone else at LG. I guess Franklin is that guy.

He was a starter in Denver and played well. Last two years were not as good but also had injuries

I've always known him as the cross-eyed looking guy from Denver the last few years. Didn't realize he went to SD.

defensive lines definitely can't read protection responsibilities.

The Los Angeles Chargers have released LG Orlando Franklin. The 29-year-old signed a free agent deal with the Chargers in 2015 after being drafted by the Broncos in 2011 and spending four seasons in Denver.
Franklin began his career playing right tackle in Denver before switching to left guard in 2014. He was one of the better guards in the NFL that season, finishing second in PFF’s pass-blocking efficiency, having allowed only one sack and 11 total QB pressures.
Franklin’s career took a downturn after signing with the Chargers in 2015, missing six games that season with various injuries. He started all 16 games in 2016, but has struggled to regain his form. He allowed 40 total QB pressures last year, the fourth-highest total among all guards.
The Chargers also released veteran offensive linemen King Dunlap and DJ Fluker in March, and will look to rebuild their offensive line with youth in 2017.

Last season, Franklin started 16 games. PFF rated him their No. 66 guard out of 72 qualifying players

so room for improvement then?

Depends on where you look. I saw somewhere else that says he was rated 32 out of 78. Better vs the run than the pass with above average power.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Saints work him at Guard and Tackle. The guy was good in Denver and sucked in SD. It'll be interesting to see if scheme, injury, or going down the shitter was the reason why he struggled in SD.

SD might be the only team that seems to be as snake-bitten as we are. We now have two players from there that have shown good potential, but an inability to stay healthy. Hopefully they contribute and stay on the field.

could be the difference between blocking for Manning and blocking for Rivers.
