The New Orleans Saints trimmed the roster in the week leading to rookie minicamp.
The Saints on Monday waived defensive end/linebacker Royce LaFrance and released tight end Jake Stoneburner as a vested veteran, according to a source.
Stoneburner and LaFrance were among the group of players to sign reserve/future contracts with the Saints in early January in the days after the 2016 regular season ended.
The 6-foot-3, 249-pound Stoneburner joined the Saints practice squad in September 2016. He entered the league in 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State and spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Rams.
The 6-foot-3, 249-pound LaFrance, who played collegiately at Tulane, spent almost two weeks on the Saints practice squad the past season.
The moves come as the Saints prepare for a three-day rookie minicamp, which is scheduled Friday through Sunday.
Pending the signings of the 2017 draft class and before Monday's transactions, the Saints were projected to be two players over the 90-maximum allowed for an offseason roster.

Yeah this should bring us to 89 (some places still counting Byrd, like overthecap, for cap purposes).
We usually head into rookie camp with one spot open to show the tryout players there is a spot to be earned.

quote:I think I've spotted the reason both players were waived. Clearly the Saints are biased against that particular height/weight combination.

Damn I was rooting for LaFrance, he grew up down the street from me.

Expect Royce LaFrance to be at rookie minicamp if he clears waivers
AND
Stoneburner, who was signed to the practice squad after a rash of injuries at the position last season, wrote a statement on the release and posted it to his Twitter account.
"Got released today by the Saints," Stoneburner said. "NFL is hard business, man, and doesn't make much sense. Life goes on and everything happens for a reason!! Might be time to join Stoneburner Wealth!! Looking forward to the future and whatever it holds!"
Stoneburner Wealth Management is an Ohio business run by Stoneburner's father, Mark. A 27-year-old who played in 20 NFL games with the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins, Stoneburner wasn't put on the Saints' active roster last season.
