If Talib gets traded to us, they eat the bonus and such.
so really:
11mil - 2017
11mil - 2018
8mil - 2019
0 dead money if cut.

Plus we can always renegotiate down the first year while still coming out ahead if cut after the first year. The player is willing to do this to get some guaranteed money.
Example:
Cut year one to $3 mil and give him a $6 mil bonus.
Now you are only committed to $6 mil before week one of year one, but it would spread out over two years if cut before the season (see Champ Bailey).
His first year hit is now only $5 mil, while year two is $13 mil and year three is $10 mil. So overall if he stays the whole contract we pay ($2 mil) less than if we don't renegotiate.
We could also cut him after year one and only owe $4 mil, but we still saved because we payed only $5 mil year one instead of $11 mil, saving $2 mil.
This is pretty much what we did with Ellerbe (only he took a bigger cut).

I still don't see a source in this thread for the rumors
Posted on 2/16/17 at 9:53 am to Fun Bunch
Oh I don't believe any of this will definitely happen (it might though). Obviously just guessing rumors.
I was just responding to the if we could afford it part. Yes we can. Easily. And more.

Oh I know. I'm just saying people throw out random quotes and don't list who the source is. Kind of drives me nuts.
If we can get DE/G/CB in FA than I will be pretty ecstatic. Opens up the draft to a large range of possibilities.

It's just a tweet that was retweeted by a few people that cover the Saints. So your source is Twitter.

I'm just concerned about Aqib being another Browner bust. Has the same scenario written all over it.

Whose Twitter?

Except Talib was an 1st team all-pro last season whereas Browner never played near an all-pro level even with SEA.

Ingram had a slow start but has really come on in his all around game the past couple of years. Probably my ideal signing at this point.
Haven't seen anyone mention Nick Perry. He had 11 sacks last year after only 12 in his first 4 years. I think Ingram is legitimately on the rise. Perry I dunno. Fluke?
COULD SOMEONE POST THE PFF DATA ON THEM.

4. Melvin Ingram, EDGE, Los Angeles Chargers Melvin Ingram has developed into the first-round pass-rushing force the Chargers thought he could become, just in time for him to turn the performance into a big-money contract from somebody—whether that’s with the Chargers or on the open market. Ingram finished the year ranked as the sixth-best edge defender in terms of PFF overall grade (88.1)—just behind teammate Joey Bosa, in fifth—recording 72 total QB pressures over the season. He also showed the ability to play in coverage more than most edge rushers, batting away two passes and allowing just 6.8 yards per reception.

15. Nick Perry, EDGE, Green Bay Packers Nick Perry is another former first-round edge defender that took some time to get going in the NFL, but has started to look worth the draft status lately. Perry posted career-highs in snaps, sacks, total QB pressures, defensive stops and more or less every other statistical category you choose to mention for the Packers this season. He is a player that might be better suited playing consistently with his hand in the dirt as a 4-3 defensive end. Either way, Perry has the position flexibility to make him an option to any scheme in the league.
of the top 50 free agents set to hit the market they had Ingram at #4 and Perry #15

Loomising would be investing in a slow corner that doesn't fit the scheme, as well as letting your 2 leaders on defense walk and signing an injured safety to the largest contract for his position.
Investing in a young pass rusher at your biggest position of need isn't the same thing. The lines are where the money should be spent.

im not against adding a high level FA, but we need to be smart with the money we have. Look at some mid level guys, and continue to build through the draft. We've seen this song & dance too many times. This is not only about this year but years to come. A post Brees salary cap situation will only add to the disaster that will likely be on our hands.

I 100% agree, but I think we should sell out for a pass rusher if we're confident in his abilities. We have the space to add a top notch rusher, add depth across the board, and still have plenty to roll over for the future.
We should never spend the space on a top level safety again. This is a front 7 and offensive line oriented league. We need to fill those holes with players that can step in immediately.
It gives us a lot more freedom in the draft, and I don't trust a rookie to give us the impact we need on the edge. And even if we add Ingram, I wouldn't be against adding another pass rusher in the 1st

Post brees will give us a lot of freedom in salary cap actually. I just don't think investing in a 27 year old pass rusher familiar with nolan is a bad thing.
And Talib would be easily cuttable without a cap hit, but we shouldn't give up a good asset for him

Who cares if Talib is an a hole. Remember the best player on our defense when we won the Super Bowl?
Posted on 2/16/17 at 5:32 pm to Fun Bunch
im done with "big name" FA, I just want good solid players with history of performing well not big star names with egos to match.
we need to bring in good talent not stars, all the "stars" we bring in are a waste of money and don't perform up to their contract values
go after the others but please pass on Talib

What free agents fit this? The reasons those type of players hit the open market are usually due to wanting too much money.

We've brought in 3 "stars" that I can think of off the top of my head:
Byrd, Shockey (via trade), and Sharper, with Sharper being over the hill at the time, but still performing great. Am I missing all these other "star" FAs we've signed?

The advantage of going after Talib is that living up to his contract doesn't really matter. It's basically year to year. The negative is whatever their asking price is
