The New Orleans Saints have restructured the contract of running back Mark Ingram, making him the third player this week to have his salary adjusted to free up salary cap space.
Ingram was slated to make $3 million in base salary in 2016; now he'll make $765,000, with the remaining $2.235 million converted to signing bonus.
Ingram's salary cap number will drop from $4 million to $2.51 million, saving the Saints $1.41 million in 2016.
Ingram's salary cap number would grow by $745,000 in 2017 and 2018. His cap number will now be $5.245 million in 2017 and $6.245 in 2018.
The Saints restructured the contracts of punter Thomas Morstead and defensive end Cam Jordan earlier this week.
The Saints now have $3.604 million in cap space available, according to NFLPA records.
Ingram, 26, is entering his sixth season with the Saints after being selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year contract extension with the club last March.

Everybody restructures but Brees. Just gonna laugh and point that out

Are we making cap space for a specific move or just for the sake of having breathing room?

I'd assume we aren't pushing monies back for no reason

I understand our cap numbers look better over the next couple of years but I hate that we just continue to kick the can down the road.

Agreed. All we're doing is creating this same cap-strapped situation for future years. I don't get it at all. But #Loomising. What ya gonna do.

I get the feeling we will have to put up with some really bad football once Brees retires.

We have one more window to try to win a SB before Drew hangs it up. They are going all in for that window. They are kicking the can down the road with some of these contracts, but they are also building a young core that should make the post Brees era a smoother transition.

It is pretty funny. Leverage against Brees & Condon so they can show they are desperate and NEED to extend him for salary cap reasons?

Hopefully they plan it right so all the pushed off money will end up in 1-2 years so we can just suffer during those years

I agree with this but if you ar gonna do it, do it on players still young and good enough where you feel they will finish out their contract. As long as they aren't released the dead money doesn't matter. Of course, I don't know shite about cap stuff, but I randomly saw someone post that once so I'm gonna believe it as fact

It's not the worst possible situation though. You would think Brees would at worst finish with a 7-9 record his last season. The following year we tank by not signing anyone and loading as much of every terrible contract we have into a single season. End up with pick 1-5 to take a possible elite player that you can build a team around. Even if you still suck the following year, you have another top 10 pick in every round to bolster your team once again. It's going to be the slow game that gets us back on top, just hope they don't break the bank for a guy like Brock Osweiller.

Brees can't just restructure. He's on his last year. He has to get an extension before any restructure can happen.
Also don't confuse a restructure (which just moves cap around and puts money in the player's hand now) with a paycut.
Also I wouldn't expect any other big money deal right now. This is likely money for draft picks and vet minimum players that could add $100-200k to the cap.
Brees or Unger will have to be extended to clear money for any more big FAs.

It'll be one year, the one right after Brees leaves. Unless he plays out his contract and leaves no dead money (and depending on any future big money FAs we might sign in the next few years).

It's less than $5 mil and we still have at least $70 mil in space next year. We aren't hurting next year. This year we are. It needs to be done.

Great! Another player has to restructure due to Brees selfishness. At least we have some players that are team first guys

I'm just going to laugh and point out that you don't know the difference between a restructure, and an extension. There's probably not a player in the league who wouldn't agree to a restructure, aka getting more of your money upfront.

if you're telling me I'm going to make 300k this year and you're going to give me 220k of it right at this moment, who is dumb enough to say no...
