@FieldYates: Source: Saints created $2.6M in cap space by turning $5.2M of Drew Brees' base salary into a signing bonus. His cap hit for 2016 is now $30M

Making room for someone, right?

It would appear that way

Also makes it harder to cut him next year....

Only viable reason to do that. What do they go for, G, WR, DE?

Yeah, presumably Brees will extend his deal in the offseason to reduce his cap impact.

I want Alshon, but I think they would go after Bennett first.

From what they are saying on Reddit, the rumor is Alshon isn't going to be traded anymore, but Matt Forte is on the trading block.

Don't like this move on the surface. Unless we are using it to get a young player like Jeffery (doubt it), why sacrifice next year's cap for space right now? Do they really think this is a playoff team this season???? We aren't one piece away from the fricking super bowl.

What the hell, is that Alshon talk legit or is this just Saints talk pixie dust wishing?

You realize unused space rolls over

And there isn't a reason to do it unless we're making an acquisition

I realize that, but like you said yourself, they are going to use it. Brees extra hit + whoever they aquire = ~5.2 mil in cap hit next year for an acquisition of a 2.6 mil player. Doesn't make sense to do that right now instead of waiting until the offseason. I get that some teams are trying to move pieces, but teams aren't going to give away players like Alshon for free.
