quote:

As the Saints arrived in West Virginia for training camp Wednesday, general manager Mickey Loomis told reporters that the sides “have not made any progress” an a potential contract extension for veteran quarterback Drew Brees.

Though Loomis going on the record with that means it’s news, it’s no surprise to those who have followed the story. Brees recently said he hasn’t heard from the team regarding a possible extension in three months.

Considering Brees set a deadline of the start of the regular season for cutting off talks, this thing could get sticky.

Loomis said he doesn’t think the situation will become a distraction for the team, and Brees has been a good soldier. But the Saints have been hurting for salary-cap space, and getting a deal done earlier could have lessened the $30 million cap number Brees is carrying and helped the team in areas besides goodwill with its most important player.

Because Brees has already been given the franchise tag twice in his career, the Saints would have to guarantee him a 44 percent raise to franchise him next year, which would mean a franchise tag of $43.2 million. That’s not going to happen, so the Saints have to get a deal done in the next five weeks or risk losing Brees next March.

In the end, Saints will make a very very generous offer.

It will come down to whether Brees WANTS to stay in Nawlins.

I mean....how many steaks can you eat....how many houses do you want....how many cars can you drive ???

Those two statements don't really support each other.

The first sounds like you are saying the Saints will offer market value.

The second sounds like you are saying that Brees should work at a bit of a discount.

I don't think the Saints are going to offer market value before the beginning of the year. They are going to let it play out and make Brees an offer next year based on his performance this year.

If Brees has a good year....they can Franchise him for over 40 million dollars a year.

Remember....Sean Payton is already on record stating he sees NO DECLINE in Brees.

Brees has already been paid over 100 million dollars by the saints....so he's not hurting for money.

Im not saying pay him a discount....I think it takes $30 million dollars a year and $60 million GUARANTEED to sign him... thats NOT a discount.

With all that $$$ already in his pocket and about $60 million guaranteed on the way.... he should take that and run..... thats why I'm saying.....take that offer.....and why I ask how many steaks can u eat or cars u want to own.

$30 million a year? Why in the world do you think he would get the largest annual contract ever in the history of the NFL at 37 years old? Luck got the highest ever at $23.3 million a year.

Brees has all the leverage....

Saints have none.

Mickey is a shrewd negotiator, this isn't anything new. Mickey will play very tight to Luck's 23.3 numbers, Drew obviously knows his potential worth of more, in the end, they are battling pennies in between 23.4 and 24.7ish range.

I would think the number of years guaranteed would be the biggest hurdle both sides are facing

well yes, always part of the puzzle. Luck had a fully guarantee of 47 at signing, with a 87 total injury only guarantee.

basically i'd think we'd need to a do a 4 yr deal, first 2 years of roughly 49 are fully guaranteed, 3rd year is injury only guarantee.

Of course.

Look, he's getting every nickel of his current deal, so there's no way he can bitch.

Setting emotion and gratitude aside, you can't tie up tons of $$$$ in a 40 YO quarterback.

He's not even 40...he's younger than Brady too. He's the reason why we're even winning while drafting and bad contracts have weighed down this team the last two years.

Of course, I've said those very words plenty of times here.

He'll be 38 at the end of this year. Any new contract he gets will commit money to him until he is 40 and probably 41. That was my point.

Him being 38 or 40 doesn't matter. Is he going to drastically fall off a cliff at 40 as opposed to 38? There's no indicator saying he's on a decline physically and 40 isn't some magic age where he can't play, just like 30 isn't a magic age for running backs.

I am trying to gauge the severity of the delays and lack of communication between Brees's agent and Loomis.

Seems to me by both sides saying they have not spoken in 3 months and Brees saying get it done before the season starts or wait until next year indicates more of a larger gap than posturing.

Also, what upside is there for Sean to say he has not seen any decline in Brees's performance? I would think the front office would be like WTF.

He's here to win games-now-so he isn't going to knock his QB, especially when there really has been no discernible decline. He is well aware that the only reason his team has manged to win 14 games in two years is b/c of Drew Brees.

The front office also wants to win games-now-, but they have to look at the contract side of things as well. Drew is getting a cool $30M this year so it's not like he is unhappy or getting underpaid.

There really is no business incentive for the Saints to sign him to a huge contract at this point.

It is the smart play.

Besides the fact that he'd be a free agent

Hey can't fault a man just for trying to get his kids through school. Totally respect Bree's ability to take an entire city for hostage so that he can have a huge piece of pie. I respect a man who likes pie.
