Saints Draft Outlook from an AFC GM

When it came to the New Orleans Saints it is obvious the team needs to get better on the defensive side of the ball, but like myself, the general manager feels as though Sean Payton may try to go offense with the second-round choice.
"The Saints are an explosive offense and they can score, but they need to desperately get better on defense, especially upfront and at cornerback," the general manager said. "One of the two players I could see them selecting would be either Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas or Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett. Both were very productive in college and can get after the quarterback. Thomas and Barnett are also solid in run defense. They need a complimentary edge rusher to team with Cam Jordan. I like what they have inside with the three young players in Sheldon Rankins, Tyeler Davison and the kid from Manitoba College in David Onyemata. I think the price-tag to keep Nick Fairley in this free agent cycle might be a little too rich for them to pay, but Fairley fits well in their defense and they just might try and do what they have to do to keep him since the other three defensive tackles come at a pretty cheap price-tag, NFL wise."
He said a cornerback would be a good fit for New Orleans in the second round.
"In Round 2 I think the Saints should go after a young cornerback, but I agree that (Sean) Payton loves offensive players and I could see them taking tight end Evan Engram from Ole Miss,"' he said. "Engram, like a lot of tight ends coming out of college today, is a glorified pumped-up wide receiver playing tight end and he is a very skilled receiver with excellent hands. But I would go after a cornerback like USC's Adoree' Jackson. Jackson is a developmental player at cornerback from a technical standpoint, but instantly he solves their issues in the return game on special teams. He needs some work with his footwork and back-pedal techniques, but he's a player in time at cornerback in the NFL, but the Saints have not had anyone to put fear in an opposing team in the return game since Darren Sproles. Jackson solves the return game woes the instant he hits the field and if they get a veteran cornerback via a trade or free agency you could work Adoree' in as a rookie in the nickel and dime sets."

The stars look aligned to get a pass rusher at #11 if not scoring one big in free agency. Hell, at this point I'd take both to see a good pash rush on D.

Yup. Make the d-line and o-line the best you can. Said it last year and saying it again.
Outside the o-line only a scat back is a need on offence.

This guy would be a very nice fit in that role. He's a very good receiving back who has both speed & quickness. Kamara is also tough to bring down for being a smaller RB.

Engram would fit in well. They finally have a stable receiver group again, but he fits that role Graham played in this offense. Big body, you can split him out and let him play receiver, but he can play inside as well, down on the line of scrimmage, whatever you want him to do.
Wouldn't hate it.
He's not near as big as Jimmy though. Seems like he has the body type of a receiver more than a tight end.

And if you took him, you keep Fleener for at least another year to transition him anyway.

Jordan Leggett is more of the big bodied, athletic TE with great hands that could be had in the middle rounds. If you watch his highlights, you can see he catches everything with his hands only which is a plus. He also isn't afraid to go down the seams. Payton loves to use his TEs down the seams to create mismatches on LBs & safeties. Leggett would be a good fit.

TE is really deep this year. You can sit back and grab a good TE later in the draft.
I agree with you on Leggett, If we were to go that route. I really like Bucky Hodges too (6' 7" 250 4.60), in the 3-4th round. Ingram is an oversized WR at 6' 3" 235 4.60. JMO

Yea I've kind of cooled on Adoree. You don't draft a returner in the 2nd round. Better CB's will be available in the 2nd round.

I like Legget alot. If it wasn't Mike Williams, Watson was looking for him for gotta have it plays.
I wouldn't mind Adoree as the 2nd round pick at all. Immediate returnee. Hopefully get a FA CB and he can be nickel/dime.

Maybe Jourdan Lewis or Desmond King might still be there in the 2nd

First of all you def don't take adoree jackson he s a small corner and I feel the name is bigger than the play. Jordan leggett is def legit and we all know we need a te but I'm thinking round four at earliest. Might be tough to take a te in round 3 and def can't take one in round 2. Anyone know leggett s grade I'm thinking early third right?

I wish I could have found a gif of the first catch above from the endzone view. Leggett put a move on Reuben Foster while going down the seam that was nasty. You can see just how much separation it got Leggett though.

If you can get the next Tyreek Hill in the second round you take him.

Joe Mixon would be better. Honestly, I think the character issues are completely overblown

Tyreek Hill also plays scatback better than Jackson will at corner.
Big difference

The only problem is that Adoree really isn't that great of a corner. You would be drafting him to be your returner & then hoping that he eventually developed into a good corner. There are easily better CB's in the 2nd and even in the 3rd round.
Also, you can get a good returner for cheap in F.A. or draft one in the 5th-7th/udfa. Not a fan of overpaying for a returner.
