I agree. We seem to have grown a brain in the past couple of offseasons

I'd like to add him, but there is no reason to be in a hurry. I'd love to only spend a 2nd on him

"intention".

FWIW I wouldn't mind if we just kept the pick.

How many rookies do the "accumulate more picks" people think make the team?

Good point. My frustration with this mindset is that they think it's so easy to just trade down. I find myself saying this far too often on here.

On top of that, this seems to be consensus when it comes to trading said pick away for an All Pro CB.

Well no shite he doesn't want to trade him. He's an All Pro CB.

I'm sure we didn't want to trade Graham or Cooks but we did it anyway

There is when they haven't signed their tender.... They can't negotiate until he signs it either, unless he's reached an agreement with the saints where the saints can engage the Pat's

It's been discussed 1,000x on here. Did I really need to expand on it?

quote:

Butler remains unsigned, the Pats will not approach the Saints about a possible deal. Per the CBA, teams must "have a good faith intention to employ the player receiving the Tender at the Tender compensation level during the upcoming season." So discussing a Butler trade prior to his signing of the tender could be viewed as a violation of the "good faith intention."

quote:

needs to happen precisely that way because Patriots coach Bill Belichick is sensitive (some would say unreasonably) to the CBA rules regarding players to whom tender offers have been extended. A player can’t be tendered as a tool for trading him, and Belichick consistently refuses to enter into trade discussions about players who have not signed their tender offers.

Everyone knows that. Again, what is he doing to be penalized? He cannot trade him until the tender is signed. So, he cannot break any rules as it just cannot happen. It is not like he can trade him before signing the tender and therefore be guilty of breaking any rules. RFAs have been traded many times in the past. This is not new territory.

That was the entire point

It was a fricking oke about what else he could say. If he said they were trying to trade him, they could be penalized

That isn't correct.

You can't tender a player for the reason of trading him. It's definitely gray waters that the Patriots are EXTREMELY careful about.

I can quote Bill and the Pats stating that they refuse to even TALK about trading players who haven't signed their tenders. Do I really need to do that for something that has been repeated on here repeatedly?

Or will LINK this work for you

They must have a good faith intention of employing the player.

Here you go:

quote:

Article XIV of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Specifically, Article XIV, Section 8(b) states that “[a] Club extending a Required Tender must, for so long as that Tender is extended, have a good faith intention to employ the player receiving the Tender at the Tender compensation level during the upcoming season.”

So according to the Pat's interpretation, talking before the RFA has come to terms with the new team violates the CBA.

Not quite. It dampens the mood a bit but I still have a strong feeling something gets done. Payton seems to love Butler and he usually moves heaven and earth to get players he falls in love with.

Plus, Butler probably wants to play in NOLA now since they weren't too far apart on contract talks. The fact that there has been no news at all means that everything is being hush hush and there is extreme secrecy, otherwise something else would have broke about the deal and potential trade falling through.

Usually no news is bad news but since Kraft's comments are the first news in weeks means that something is up.

He's no doubt telling the saints that's what it will cost. I say forget it. Too costly. Draft CB at 32. We better not sign Butler and have to give up 11

if its a serious #11 or forget it then forget it, move on to draft and hope we get a great CB option in the second or 3rd rounds (yes maybe get 2 of them) I say that because breaux may be wanting too much money when his contract is up so replacement CB options are worth picking up before we worry about getting another RB.

I just think this is more about trying to get the saints to up their offer of (I presume) a 2nd rounder to get us willing to offer the 32 pick if we think we have to have him

Kraft is only saying this to make us want him more and drive up the asking price to our 11. I say call his bluff and walk away then before the draft offer their 3 back and no more as long as he signed his tender.
