VRENTAS: Who made the decision to run a version of Seattle’s defense?
ROB: I think everything starts with the head coach and goes higher than that. They signed players; they signed a free-agent free safety [Jairus Byrd in 2014], and said, we are going to keep him in the middle of the field like the goalpost. Well, that’s great. He’s not going to make one play back there, and now we have changed the entire defense for one signing, and it ruined us. He’s a great kid. But the truth of the matter is, you let an All-Pro safety walk, Malcolm Jenkins, and lost your two best leaders on the team, him and Roman Harper. We changed the entire style of play. It was strange. But hey, I did the best job I could. And it wasn’t good enough.

I don't really see that as talking shite. It's more the Saints made a string of horrible personnel decisions and Rob Ryan paid the price

he had me until he started praising the play of Harper/Jenkins while they were here. In looking at how those 2 have played since they moved to other teams, it makes a strong argument that Ryans' system was flawed.

I don't disagree with what he said. Should've never let Jenkins walk.

They played 1 year under Ryan and we had a top 5 defense despite losing multiple players in the secondary to injury including Greer.

We signed the highest paid safety in the league without consulting our defensive coordinator.

VRENTAS: In New Orleans, you worked closely with Dennis Allen last season, who ended up replacing you as defensive coordinator when you were fired. How did that outcome impact you moving forward?

ROB: We all knew what the situation was. I wasn’t fired [the year before] for one reason, because I think it would have probably looked bad for Sean [Payton], losing another coordinator. So they made an easy move. That doesn’t make Dennis Allen a bad person. Dennis Allen was coming in there to coach secondary, and the secondary was atrocious. But it’s all on me. That’s OK. The only thing I regret is two years ago, when this [scheme change] was going to happen, I should have gone into Sean and talked to him. Sean is a good person. I didn’t, and I just let it happen, so I deserve what I got. Look, I have been fired before. But I get pissed in New Orleans because I know I am better than that. I am a way better coach than I was allowed to be, and that’s just the truth. Oh, we are dead last in defense. Well, yeah, you are going to be dead last playing this bullshite defense. But it is my fault because I didn’t say anything. I never stood up and said, F-- you, I ain’t coaching this. I promise you I’d say it now. When it starts to trickle down to your kids and starts hurting them, then it’s like, damn, I should have done better here. I am tough enough to take it. But my family has to pack those bags and move. Quite frankly, [my wife] Kristin is getting angry about moving.

So what was his excuse for what happened in Dallas?

Woodbery:

quote:

Conveniently Rob was in charge only when the defense was good. When it was terrible, someone else's fault.

Sean Payton: To say Rob Ryan wasn't in charge of Saints defense 'is silly'

quote:

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton on Friday dismissed the notion by former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan that he did not have a full say in how the defense was run, which Ryan said in an interview with theMMQB.com website.

"We tried to implement some schemes we thought would help our defense," Payton said in an interview with NBC Sports Radio. "But the idea that it wasn't his defense, or that he wasn't, you know, in charge of it, is silly."

quote:

Ryan said the biggest mistake he made with the Saints was "sitting on my hands and collecting a paycheck" as the Saints defense sank from fourth in total yards allowed in 2013 to near last in both of the next two seasons.

"It's never any one person's defense or offense to begin with," Payton said. "We try to really look closely at who we are as a defense as a team. It was us in meetings going through what we felt was the best way to win football games. That's hard for me to really comment on."

Why? They had good years in 2013.

It wasn't a secret. As Ryan's defense declined the past season and a half, TV cameras often caught Payton and Ryan visibly upset and snapping at each other on the sideline during games.

A source within the Saints organization said most of the sideline issues revolved around Ryan's calls coming in late or the wrong defense being called. The source, who was granted anonymity to speak freely of the situation, said that happened "at least 40 or 50 times this year."

"It was awful," the source added.

Yeah, he was a sloppy coach. At the same time he was set up for failure with the personnel decisions and scheme changes that went above his head.

Bill Johnson is the giant elephant in the room. He wouldn't draft guys who fit Ryan's scheme.

Rex and Rob are the same everywhere they go. They are amazing for a year or two. They start drinking their own kool-aid. Then they talk shite. They put a target on their own backs. Everybody figures them out and takes pleasure in humiliating them. But they're still talking shite, until the team and city gets tired of them and they get run out of town on a rail.

So now we know who really came up with this dumbass triangle defense scheme. I guess what Ryan said about Allen running the defense all last year was true. Allen will be the next fired failure DC in the Payton era after how many?

Harper only played 9 games and had 1 interception, 2 pass defends, 27 tackles, and no sacks (none in 2012 as well when he played the entire season).

Jenkins has 68 tackles, 6 pass break ups, but no interceptions, and from what I remember was still struggling with bad penalties and awful angles.

Good years?

Kat is all over it this morning:

quote:

What one former player told me in 2015: "In 2013 ... the defense was ballin, We get back the next year and Sean has his hand in it."

quote:

To contrast that, what a source within the Saints organization told me in response: "No one interfered in '14 at all. Rob earned '14."

So LSU fans should find all of this amusing and sad at the same time.
