we aren't giving a 1st for him

if you want him you do, being tendered a first round offer means any team making a better offer must give them a first round draft pick as compensation if they don't match the offer.

its the way the rules are written, there is no other option unless he first agrees to a deal with NE to eliminate that compensation rule

on the merits I agree that it may not be affair price but hell we got a 1st for cooks and he was a player we had to get rid of and they knew it so im sure pats fans felt cooks was only worth a 3rd or 2nd at the most

we aren't giving a 1st for him, I GUARANTEE it the more and more I look at how NE has dealt players the past few years.

if Chandler freakin Jones who as a top 5 DE couldn't net a 1st and Jamie Collins a top 5 OLB couldn't get a 2nd, a #1 CB like Butler won't garner a 1st.

I bet we could send NE their 3rd back and get him

but what about the first round tender? I thought the whole point is that a team would have to give them a 1st to offer him a contract

I assume that if we agreed with NE to give them a 2nd rounder, then they would offer him a 2nd round tender. Then we offer him a contract, NE doesn't match, & they get our 2nd round pick. At least I think that's how it works.

Bonethug explains it in this thread.

He has a first round tender offer on the table. That means if any team signs him to an offer sheet and the Pats decline to match they get that team's highest (or original; I forget the exact rule) first rounder (so our 11).

But if NE agrees to trade him, he signs the Pats tender and can be traded for ANYTHING NE accepts. It doesn't have to be a first, a second, a fifth. Just whatever they accept.

They are two completely separate things.

The pats have all the leverage lol hes either playing for 3 mil, not playing at all, or some dumb team is giving up a first for him. Why would they do anything else when he walks they get a 3rd rounder comp pick.

Because someone could give them a 2nd round pick in a trade & they wouldn't have to pay him 3mil this year. Comp picks are also the very last picks in a round. Any other 3rd rounder is better than a comp pick. He's also publicly announced that he doesn't want to be there. I'd give up a 2nd or 3rd for him.

In all seriousness...I don't see why the Pats wouldn't take a 2nd rounder for him. Given our current situation...I think we can afford it & should do it if other teams are offering a better 3rd rounder than we have. We would solidify our situation at CB(on paper), & we would still have 2 picks in the 1st & 2 in the 3rd. Also, most CB's don't play at a very high level their rookie year...it improves our chances of winning this year if we don't have to rely on a rookie in the draft.

It's either Butler, one of the free agent starting CB's left(Claiborne & Carr), or a rookie. I could be wrong, but Butler is the safest bet imo.

1 more year of production with a 3rd is more valuable than a 2nd and gone now

They get a pick early (2017 instead of 2019)
They don't risk not getting the comp pick by signing a quality player to offset the loss

Fellas, the dude is gonna stay in N.E. for one more year and win another SB and then pick what team he wants to play for. Y'all need to wake up! He ain't coming to N.O. If he were it would have already happened!

Lol you know they want him to play for a little over $3 million when top corners make $12 million plus?

I believe in hometown discounts when appropriate but 75%??

But he's won TWO titles with them, so he kind of is a winner. Hell, he sealed the game for his first title. Maybe now he wants to be paid like the good player he is.

If he signs that tender without absolutely knowing another team is trading for him and giving him a big contract, then he is stuck with two options:
1. Play for one year with the Pats at $3MM
2. Holdout

He signs that tender now, the Pats can stop fielding offers for him and have a really good corner at a cheap rate. I can't see a team giving him an offer before he signs and having the Pats decline and get a 1st for him.

Malcolm Butler has received interest from several teams, per source. Don't be surprised if the action picks up with Butler this week.

All that said, I was given a strong indication Butler prefers to be a "Patriot for life." He wants to make it work in New England.

Patriots offered Butler somewhere around $6M to $7M annually last season. Butler hoped to be paid in the ballpark of a top-10 CB.

Many of the comments on twitter about interest in him make me feel that all the talk about he Patriots/Saints still working on a deal for him as "phase 2" of Cooks trade is just wishful thinking. It sounds as if the Cooks trade is what it is and now the Patriots are looking to see what they can salvage from Butler.

Patriots told Butler last season they wouldn't pay a CB more than $10M annually, so the Gilmore contract was definitely a gut punch.

If nothing happens with Butler and he remains a Patriot with the $3.91M tender, he doesn't have any plans to hold out.
