Per rotoworld

Mike Giardi if Comcast SportsNet New England reports restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler wants out of Foxboro.

Butler is "extremely frustrated" by the Patriots' willingness to trade him and commitment to Stephon Gilmore as one of the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks. The Patriots wanted to deal Butler to New Orleans, but could not because Butler refused to sign his one-year restricted tender. One way the Pats could appease Butler is by giving him a big contract. That ship may have sailed, however, due to the money they invested in Gilmore.

i felt like the Gilmore contract would be a slap in the face to Butler... guess he felt the same

so if he doesn't sign his tender then what? What are his options?

Yeah if they wanted to pay both they should have extended Butler before FA.

Not surprised he feels disrespected by then signing another CB to a huge money deal while still trying to low ball him.

Could also be a ploy to get the Pats to up their offer though. Doubt they fall for that.

Loomis has to find a way to get Brown over here. This team can't go into the season with only one legit CB.

So can we match Gilmore's contract to pull Butler in?

If we can somehow get him out of there without giving 32 back I'd feel a lit better about the whole thing.

Well eventually he has to sign it or not play football anymore. Same concept as a franchise tag.

How would we get Butler?

I assume he has to sign his tender with NE, & then we would have to give up something in a trade to acquire him.

Can we sign sign him to a big contract(which I assume is the only way he would come here) after we trade for him, or would he be stuck with his tender contract that he signed?

I know we have enough money left to pay him & I assume it would cost the 32nd pick or our 2nd rounder to get him.

Any offer you make to Butler can be immediately matched by NE and Butler is a part of that agreement. Or NE could take the 1st round pick (NOs original pick #11) and Saints could have Butler for that contract and forfeit of the pick.

Butler is going to want Gilmore money. Patriots ain't paying that much for both corners.

From NE side of things, they control all the power here. No one is going to sign him to an offer sheet, and if they did it would be a HUGE favor to the pats as they get the option of a contract he has to sign or a 1st round pick.

Or if he signs the tender, the Pats can keep him for the year at 3 million dollars and watch him walk next offseason and receive a 3rd round comp pick. So they don't have to settle for a lower round pick for him in a trade. 1st or 2nd round compensation may get Butler out of NE.

If the saints were to sign him to a RFA offer sheet, and the pats declined to match, the Saints would be required to send their original pick #11 to NE. NO does not get to choose what pick gets sent to NE as compensation.

I hope we don't go that route. I know Belichik would take that all day though.

I'm sorry, thats not what I am talking about, Since he is a RFE, has not signed, I meant in a trade with N.E. can we all agree to numbers that will make him happy and sign the tender so the Pats can trade him to us.

To answer some questions (some which have been answered):

Yes we definitely have the money to sign him long term.

Yes he has to sign his tender before being traded.

He won't agree to sign the tender if the new team isn't going to pay him what he wants.

No one will sign him to an offer sheet and risk giving up a first.

Very doubtful anyone trades a first for him (you'd just sign him to an offer sheet in that case). He'll likely go for a second if traded, or MAYBE a third and some other pick.

He won't sit the year out. That never works in the player's favor and only hurts his long term value (as well as loses him money this year).

Anything I missed?
