In looking at how Seattle built their team to compete, they built around Defense, OL, RB, and then WR and QB. They did get lucky with Wilson but prior to his huge contract killing their cap, they had tremendous success with this approach. Is this the right method going forward?

Signing Brees killed our cap and severely limited our ability to upgrade other areas of the roster. While the rules do favor them, it seems that top 15 QBs are overpaid as a percentage of the overall cap.

I say that we would be better served building pass rushers, run stuffers, dbs, OL, RB and then get a game manager at QB. Play counter to everyone else and find deals because as an organization, we have more resources available to devote to those position groups.

Thoughts?

Look west ward to Houston for why you don't do that.

No. Overpaying free agents and letting your productive players go to Free Agency was a bigger factor on the cap situation than one player's contract. This argument always fails to point out that if we let Brees walk, how would we have been in a better situation from there on out? What moves do you then make to acquire a player in the draft, and even with hindsight, which player do you then acquire?

Signing Curtis Lofton instead of spending a pick or two to fill the hole left by Vilma and not replacing Shan-wow. Letting Nicks walk and only spending marginally less on Grubbs in free agency. Replacing Jenkins with Byrd (who has produced less octane than a single elephant fart). Depending on Champ Bailey to replace Greer. The list of missteps in personnel management goes deeper than re-signing one key, productive member of your team.

Ironically, both teams have productive, highly-paid quarterbacks. What's your point?

The Bengals actually did a damn good job building their team as well. Seattle & the Pats are good examples too. Keeping Ireland is a must if we want to dig out of this hole.

Very much so. I bet last year they would have loved Drew Brees.

For every Seattle with Wilson there are two chicago Bears with Rex Grossman or 49ers with Kaepernick or Jets with Mark Sanchez.

Whatever New England is/has been doing, the Saints need to do.

Well, we can start by extending Armstead now.

He's a building block, not a 1 year wonder.

What they have done is keep their productive QB, tailor an offense to his strenthgs, and let everyone else pretty much move on 1 yearearly. They also have a winning mindset and team first concept that does have many older free agents or washed up vets going there for redemption, paying them less. It is however, not for everyone (Reggie Wayne), and if they were losing, they would be attacking BB the same as Chip with rants about cheating, racism, etc.

It isn't hard to see what they do. They stock draft picks, but draft horribly. So they get older free agents, but don't pay. They have really limited numbers of high priced players, Brady and Gronk. They do act like the smartest guys in the room and usually are. They really win where it counts in the front office and that makes for wins on the field.

Wait. What???? These teams have the two best QBs in NFL. Don't kid yourself. They are paid!!!! The real issue is they know how to fill a roster around the elite QB. After 2012 Saints have failed miserably there.
