Ranking all 32 NFL backfields heading into 2017

Some of bleacher report's best work. Behind this OL, oh lawd. I'm telling you, if we have an average defense, that'd be awesome. Fortunately, I don't think it will really matter with a dominant run game to keep them off the field and a HOF QB.

Our backfield is scary again. I feel terrible for Ingram but every team needs 2 good running backs. We have 2 great ones and a rookie who is unknown but lethal. I hope Payton learns to feed the hot hand and not stay in a Peterson first down, Ingram second down type of thing. Brees fixin' to turn into a doctor and diesect these secondaries.

too early to say, no clue how peterson's health will show up when he's in pads.
I honestly think its Tennessee and Atlanta are the top 2 backfields in the league.
As a unit, we're better than Bell, Elliott, or McCoy alone, but we're not better than Murray-Henry, Freeman-Coleman

I hate Atlanta's backfield. They absolutely embarrassed the D in week 3. However, I think if Peterson is 90% of his old self and Kamara has an instant impact, the Saints backfield will be ever better than ATL's

Not to knock Coleman because he has good stats, but they are backup stats and they don't blow you away (aside from the tds). Ditto for Henry with less receptions and tds.
If Peterson is healthy and Kamara can be a third of 2011 Sproles we easily have the best backfield and it's not even close.

Kamara is my favorite pick they made because I have a clear vision of how I think he'll be used. He is going to be a goddam stud in this offense. The offense put up nice numbers last season, but they really lacked efficiency. A good running game and a scat back like Kamara, they will wear defenses out.
Will be up to the defense, as we say every year.

and to be fair, they added hill who is their hammer/closer.
Freeman: 227 carries, 1079 yards, 4.8 YPC, 11 TDs
54 receptions, 462 yards, 2 TDs
Coleman: 118 carries, 520 yards, 4.4 YPC, 8 TDs
31 receptions, 421 yards, 3 TDs
-----------------
Murray: 293 carries, 1287 yards, 4.4 YPC, 9 TDs
53 receptions, 377 yards, 3 TDs
Henry: 110 carries, 490 yards, 4.5 YPC, 5 TDs
13 receptions, 137 yards, 0 TDs
-----------------
Ingram: 205 carries, 1043 yards, 5.1 YPC, 6 TDs
46 receptions, 319 yards, 4 TDs
Hightower: 133 carries, 548 yards, 4.1 YPC, 4 TDs
22 receptions, 200n yards, 1 TD
By default, we can assume all the carries from Hightower->Peterson and all Cadet->Kamara. But at the end of the day, there's only going to be so many carries/touches to go around.
I think highly of this group, but cautiously optimistic tells me Atlanta's trio could be better. Freeman and Coleman > Ingram and Kamara. Hill vs Peterson can decide that.

I'm honestly excited and can see a clear vision for all of our picks. Now whether they pan out is another issue, but we got 6 players in the top 103 picked so the talent should be there.
Obviously Lattimore is going to be a starter on the outside. Whether that is game 1 or even this year is up in the air, but the talent is clearly there if he can adjust and grasp the defense (which is easier on our corners since it's more man on the outside).
Ramcyzk will be getting snaps this year, and with Armstead and Kelemete already hurting the tackle depth is very important. I think he willbe first man up if either Strief or Armstead can't go.
Williams has already been flashing in OTAs and minicamp. He has range and gets his hands on the ball. He could perhaps be a true centerfielder for us.
And of course Kamara will play the joker role and will get a fair share of snaps. Even if he doesn't have a big year I think even as a decoy he can open things up.
Anzalone was the "shock" pick, but apparently has good speed and instincts to the ball. I think he'll get snaps at both Sam and Will, especially with Ellerbe's history. Hell if Anthony actually steps up and takes the Mike job I could see Klein at Sam and Anzalone at Will, with either Anzalone or Anthony coming off in obvious passing downs.
And then Hendrickson and Muhammad are both potential pass rush specialists, and I think Hendrickson can be a special teams asset as well.
I know some people freaked out but honestly given the way the draft fell I find it hard for us to have had a better one. I know pass rusher this and that, but aside from Barnett we would have been reaching at any other pick (and you have to go Lattimore at 11).

I don't agree by default that Freeman/Coleman is better than Ingram/Kamara. A lot of that will depend on how good Kamara actually is (and so far he is showing tons of potential and Brees said you tell or show him something once and he's got it).
And Peterson will EASILY be better than Hill. Very, very easily.

Good read, I like reading BR. Don't think we keep Cadet and Lasco. In the fourth spot I'd rather Lasco and see what he can do.

I have no issue with the Saints being high (even #1), but that list is laughably bad.
Also, them writing skills though.

Yeah definitely some headscratchers in there.

Not the most respectable source. Just shared as I was shocked to see the Saints RBs getting that much love from any media source

I think we have the best 3 man backfield in the league....... problem is.......
Whose healthy to block for them ?

I love the article's reference to Mike Bell from the Super Bowl winning team. His role was pivotal and he played it to perfection. I was shocked we lost him.
Posted on 6/17/17 at 1:53 pm to Bayou
His stats weren't irreplaceable (only 3.8 ypc) and he royally pissed off Payton and could have cost us the SB because he didn't wear the god damn cleats. He played for 2 teams in 2010 and then was out of the league.
Ivory filled that role much better than Bell did (problem with him was injuries, playing in 12, 6, and 6 games while here), and Robinson and Hightower did just about as well.
In other words, we were fine without Bell. Losing him isn't what made our run game worse (though we had a good one in 2011). It was losing Kromer and the line getting older/worse.

I don't think Denver has an impressive stable of backs by any means, but having them at #31? No way... CJ Anderson, Jamaal Charles and Devonte Booker are OK. Especially if Jamaal Charles is at 80% or better.
Posted on 6/17/17 at 2:13 pm to TTsTowel
Yeah Denver at 31 is the first one that made me go WTF? If Charles can provide even 30 or so catches and 500 yards rushing that puts them much higher than 31.
