Just sign Cousins next year, cheaper and younger that Drew (but not as good).

Cousins will not be cheaper.

Brees deserves every penny he gets but when you pay the QB that much you sacrifice in other areas and the Saints front office has had too many misses in draft and free agency.

Pats get away with it because they pay Brady and don't make glaring mistakes when filling out their roster and usually hit in the draft by accumulating picks instead of giving up picks when the Saints always want to move up for some player they probably could have got had they stand pat on draft day.

Right, but New England moves Brady's money around all over the place and makes it work.

Why can't we follow their lead?

You mean that guy that won us out first ever playoff game and was named coach of the year?

Because they are able to get player sin that want to compete for a championship of cheaper deals. And, when they miss, they don't miss big. We have tried the moving the money around strategy several times, and have lead the league in Dead Money for the last 3-5 years (by a large margin). Once we clear a lot of the dead money, and as long as we do not create a lot more, we would be able to use some of those same strategies. But, when close to 10% of your cap is being used on former players (I think it was closer to 25% each of the last 2 years); it's harder to do.

He will retire as a Saint. He will never play for another team.

I feel like the national sports media is just dying for Brees and Payton to leave New Orleans for bigger markets.

We need to keep him so he breaks all of the records as a Saint.

Whether Brees stays in New Orleans or not, $18 million will count against the team’s salary cap in 2018 in his name. The cap charge from a new deal would only add to that. Which means that, if he has for example a cap charge of $20 million in 2018, the Saints would have $38 million assigned to Brees next year.

So, if he goes, we are still charged $18M against the cap? If he stays, it's $38M against the cap?

That's stupid all around.

Have to be honest, if this team misses the playoffs again I'm preparing myself for the worst.

When Drew retires he'll probably never visit NOLA ever again.
