If the Saints played in the AFC West instead of the NFC West, how many more divisional titles would they have won?

How many more playoff games would they have won?

At least one more than they did for sure (0-4).

AFC West in the 80s and 90s wasn't a pushover division. Raiders and Broncos had some pretty competitive teams during that era. That's just a couple that come to mind.

Maybe you should do some research before e-vomiting.

That, and outside of the 49ers the NFC West was horrible.

Frisco was certainly a major problem for us.
Without them maybe a couple of more. Maybe. Reason being who the hell was going to be out smarted by Carl thirdandlong Smith. Guy couldn't think his way out of a revolving door!

Agree with Goat, sure you penciled in two Ls every season for the Niners, but when every offensive series was run up the middle, run up the middle, panicked pass, Morten Andersen field goal attempt, the problem wasn't the conference we were in.

...as it relates to Division championships, yes it was.

The Saints had an incredible record vs. the AFC during that stretch if I recall correctly.

bullshite. In 1987 and 1992 the Saints had the 2nd best record in the NFL and were wild cards both times. In 1988 the Saints were in a 3-way tie for the division title. They lost the NFC West tie breaker to the 49ers and they won the Super Bowl. They lost the wild card tie breaker to the Rams too and didn't even make the playoffs. In 1989, the 49ers and Rams played in the NFCCG. So no, the rest of the NFC West did not suck.

In fairness to OP, being in the West then like being in AFC East: just playing for 2nd in division if you're not NE.

This really isn't true but has been a recurring talking point for decades for some reason

If we'd had a decent QB instead of Hebert we probably would've gone to a SB or two, even being in the same div as SF

Hebert wasn't great but he was better than the top 50% of the league. You really have to look hard at the coaching and management during that time for the blame.

All of this talk about the 49ers is BS. People act like they were what kept us from winning it all. No, the years where we had playoff teams we lost in the wildcard game. Our teams were inconsistent and poorly coached.

If it weren't for e-vomiting, this website wouldn't exist.

Also, you are comparing the Raiders and Broncos to the fricking 49ers? Get the f*ck outta here!

The Saints record was phenomenal against AFC teams in the late 80s and early 90s, even in the lean years of '89 and '90.

Could go either way. I think a fair amount of how good a team is, is who you are chasing/competing against.

Jim Mora came in and targeted the 49ers. We built to compete with them. That happened to make us good enough to beat most of the rest of the league.

The Rams weren't bad and the Falcons was led by Primetime Deion Sanders,Andre Rison, and Bob Whitfield.

Falcons were garbage and the Rams were good until 1990. Then in 1991 they flip-flopped.

WTF are you talking about... The coaching and management gave us playoff/ championship caliber teams. Hebert was the inconsistent one. Whenever the game relied on his arm he failed every time. Hence his last two playoff performances...

December 28, 1991
Atlanta Falcons 27, New Orleans Saints 20
-After Haynes scored the winning touchdown for the Falcons, the Saints reached the Atlanta 35-yard line before Hebert threw an interception to Falcons defensive back Tim McKyer to clinch the victory.

After the '93 eagles home playoff game every caller on the Buddy D post game wanted Hebert out of town...
January 3, 1993
Philadelphia Eagles 36, New Orleans Saints 20
quote:

-With less than 11 minutes left in the game, Cunningham connected with wide receiver Fred Barnett for a 35-yard touchdown completion. Then on the first play of the Saints' next possession, Eagles linebacker Seth Joyner intercepted a pass to set up running back Heath Sherman's 6-yard touchdown, giving Philadelphia the lead, 24-20. After New Orleans got the ball back, Eagles defensive lineman Reggie White sacked Hebert in the end zone for a safety. Philadelphia kicker Roger Ruzek then added a 39-yard field goal, and 19 seconds later, defensive back Eric Allen intercepted Hebert and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown.

Those two games were rough because in the Falcons game, we had a 17-10 halftime lead and then against the Eagles, the Saints were up 20-7 going into the 4th Quarter.

I was 11 when we lost to the Eagles. I remember being so mad that I went outside and cursed out my neighbor who was probably 30 years older than me.
