Looking at Brees cap numbers this year and next, I've wondered why he hasn't been extended to provide cap relief. IMO, the reason he hasn't been extended is because the FO is planning for life without him. I don't see Brees on the roster after 2016.

With that being said, I think we MUST draft a QB this year. If Brees is not in the plans for 2017+, I don't see how we can justify paying his salary and absorbing the cap hit in 2016.

I think we should trade him next offseason, barring a Championship this year. That way, we can get some value for him while letting him sign an extension somewhere else and taking his cap number for 2016 off the books.

We have to move on eventually and I think next offseason is the time.

Which means we need to get a QB ready. We need to draft one.

No they'll restructure(or extend) him next year. There's no reason to do it this year.

There's no QBs worth drafting this year

If they were going to do it, why not this year? His cap number is ridiculous.

How would waiting another year benefit the team? (Not sarcastic, serious question)

the Saints said they had a plan to get under the cap this year without doing it. We are there.

The Saints have more leverage next offseason and the future cap hits will be less with this year's # of the books.

So by doing it next year instead, it would lower his cap hit in the future compared to doing it this year. It would also make next year's cap hit a lot lower

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I've been going under the assumption that this would be the year we extend him since his number jumped so high. When that didn't happen I started to think about why.

Well first it gives us options this year. Let's say Mariotta fell or fell enough for us to jump and take him and the Saints really liked him. Well had we extended Brees we are pretty much locked into him for three years at that point. That's three years where we could have had a much cheaper QB on a rookie contract.

It also lets us see how he performs this year and see if he really is skewing downward (despite the good overall numbers his play was not like 2009-2011).

The last reason is it helps the cap a little more next season if we decide to extend him then, or we could just move on if we see him trending downward.

And while things like shoring up protection and locking up a hopefully workhorse HB helps now, it is even more important for a young QB.

Also the fact that we traded Jimmy who said he only wanted to play with Brees. If we do the unthinkable and get rid of Brees next year we have two years of Jimmy not playing with him and maybe demanding a trade. So we get ahead of it and do a trade on our terms.

There are signs we are preparing to move on from Brees. Payton even had a comment when asked about our window referring to Brees aging and Payton basically said the Saints' window is not closing and he will keep it slammed open. He said a specific player's window might be closing but not the Saints'.

After Drew Brees, I think the Saints are probably going to suck like they did for years. I just have that feeling. We're the Saints, look at all the F'd up stuff that has happened since the Super Bowl win. I say play him until he's almost in the grave.

The reason we have to hold on to brees is because he can play with our average receivers. He has to stay this year but I would not be opposed to trading him and using the money to stack the offense while tanking a year and getting a much cheaper young qb in the draft.

The trick to a Super Bowl is drafting a qb that's worth a crap low.

Yes, it may happen next offseason, or maybe even next week.
Brees is still a valuable commodity, so another team close to winning (but needing a QB) might be willing to make a move on him.
Brees might be open to finishing with a Super Bowl run somewhere, then retiring.

Evidence is mounting that a deal is in the works;

Brees to reunite with Graham (his favorite target) in Seattle, in return for Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman and a tape of crowd noise for the Dome sound system.

Payton will probably leave when Brees is done. Don't be fooled by Payton. He's a business man. Brees makes him a better play caller. Not to say that he hasn't been a very good offensive mind, but what are the odds of the Saints getting anything even close to what he has experienced as the Saints coach. Throw in all the other ongoing BS that is going on and I could see a quick exit.

He had a $3.7 million cap hit last year. They haven't even felt that impact yet

They lost their entire defense to injuries and suspensions this year. Their offensive line struggled too.
