PFF Analysis of Preseason Game #1

PFF used their handy-dandy statistics to identify some interesting performances during the game.
And before you tell me that it was just preseason and against backups, believe me, I know.
Save it.
At LT:
Tyrunn Walker Surprises:
He was also given the "game ball" by PFF for all-around performance.
Cam Jordan appears to benefit from switch to 3-4:
Will Smiff got the worst grade:
And finally, I thought this stat was interesting:
And before you tell me that it was just preseason and against backups, believe me, I know.

At LT:
quote:
The job looks like it belong to Charles Brown (+1.0) and there was nothing in his 20 snaps to suggest any different. In 13 pass blocks he gave up no pressure, though he only had to deal with Tamba Hali for two pass rushes.
quote:
The next man up was Terron Armstead (+1.9) who had some issues against the run (he nearly gave up a tackle for a loss but for a missed tackle from Edgar Jones) but was solid in pass protection. The third man in was Jason Smith (+0.9) who didn’t embarrass himself.
Tyrunn Walker Surprises:
quote:
You can only beat what is in front of you and Tyrunn Walker (+3.7) certainly did that. It was a noteworthy display by the 2012 undrafted free agent, with the Saints not looking like a team full of interior pass rush. He picked up four hurries, chased down a screen pass for a tackle for no gain, and added two defensive stops in the run game.
He was also given the "game ball" by PFF for all-around performance.
Cam Jordan appears to benefit from switch to 3-4:
quote:
The Saints’ switch to a 3-4 defense promises to take advantage of some of their talent. Most noticeably Cameron Jordan (+2.9)... He only had 20 snaps but walked away with a QB hit and two defensive stops.
Will Smiff got the worst grade:
quote:
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Will Smith (-1.3). He’ll spend a lot of time with his hand in the dirt, but three snaps in coverage for the big man is probably three too many.
And finally, I thought this stat was interesting:
quote:
The Saints only missed six tackles, while the Chiefs were up at 11.

holy shite - only 6 missed tackles - that's amazing.
and will smith - not so much surprising.

I don't seen Smith making the final cut

Yeah, pretty cool.
But what I'm taking away most from this analysis is that we seem to be ok at LT.
We have talent, and not only that, options.

I agree - i only saw one play where pressure really got by the LT - and it was not his fault it happened. after watching the DVR i'm more comfortable with what we have at LT now.

Negative Nancy comment: You might see this stat if guys cant get to the ball (Smith) or get off blocks. Gotta attempt a tackle before you can miss, right?

Only 6 missed tackles? Wow. That's very encouraging.
I think Walker will be great depth and utilized pretty often, especially now that Coleman is out.
Jordan is obviously going beast mode this season.
Nice to see Brown and Armstead get some love. When Armstead was in I tried to pay special attention to him and he looked really good in pass pro. He was throwing defenders around pretty easily. Can't wait to see this guy develop.

Will Smith at OLB in 2013 has to be one of the worst decisions in history of the world. Maybe not top 5 worst decisions, but top 100 worst decisions for sure. No way is one of those UDFA OLBs not better than him.
And how are the coaches going along with this? It's not like Ingram where people debate. Everyone besides Smith thinks this is bad. And deep down even Smith thinks it's a bad idea.
Are we hoping offensive coordinators take pity on us and don't run or pass in his direction because it's bad karma or something? I just don't get it.
Sincerly,
Confused on Saints Talk

He's a huge liability and it is plain for everyone to see, I'm sure it will be addressed before game 1.

I don't know how Will Smith is better than any of the other players I saw in the game on Friday. Tyrunn Walker...that #97, whoever that guy is.

I think (no, hope) that the coaches are giving Smith every opportunity to show something in camp and preseason.
And if he doesn't, then he'll be bumped.
That way, the coaches can say that they both:
1. showed deference to the veteran by giving him many chances, AND
2. will still be able to play the best players on the roster.

The linebackers concern me. The Chiefs first time dinked and dunked their way to a touchdown on the opening drive. Nothing downfield, a lot of passes crossing in front of linebackers. Will Smith has no shot at defending that kind of stuff.

No Wilson, Gallette, or Vilma. Take it with a grain of salt.

Fair enough. Nothing is gonna look pretty with Will Smith chugalugging after a running back.

Walker has to make this team

thats something that is adjusted mid game. Players on both sides left after that series and you really dont know how the rest would have played
