Why do I have a suspicion this is turning into some kind of extension for Sean?

Because that is the obvious answer. The two days before he met with the media were for him and Loomis to work out a deal. I imagine he will sign a 2 year extension, with Brees signing a 3 year.

Not sure who it was but I was listening to 870 this morning and some guy was going over the situation saying he was almost positive Payton would be elsewhere next season. If it is true, I at least want some damn good compensation for him.

he can't just up and leave like a college coach. If he is coaching anywhere other than NOLA next year we will have traded him for some form of compensation

TribStarTJames: According to an NFL source, the Colts were negotiating with Sean Payton reps while Pagano talks were also happening. Talks broke down.

Apparently he was in talks with the Colts..so looks like it's certainly not an impossibility he's actually leaving. I have to think he Giants rang him up last night.

I'm guessing they talked about an extension yesterday (hence the compensation talk) and will be discussing an extension in principle with Brees' agent today. Something that puts the contracts expiring around the same time is my guess.

My hope is that the NY and SF jobs get filled soon. I really think if those two teams are taken off the market, we'll retain Payton.

McAdoo looks like he's getting talked up for the NY job. But if you're their front office, not sure how you don't go balls to the wall for Payton. I know I would.

Why is every off-season like a torture session?

This kind of stuff fascinates me. I love the team building/offseason/draft/FA aspect of the NFL almost as much as the games.

I take the McAdoo thing back, apparently they're looking at Spags. Which is surprising.

If true, what are the chances Loomis is off to the side looking like Aleva when LSU announced Miles was staying.

I'm sure the NFL will investigate them for tampering

This was the only place that had me concerned. I think Payton salivated at the chance to coach Luck. The Giants are the only possible landing spot at this point and I think that is pretty slim.
