Didn't see a thread but Payton has been in the news with comments about refs this week. As I read this report one sentence jumped out to me as a glaring truth...

There’s a lot of stuff that I don’t think is being driven necessarily by what’s best for our game. It might be best for television.

THIS is the problem in the evolution of the NFL for me. There are major headlines so far this season about how TV ratings are down across the board. Why? The inconsistency of refs is a big part IMO. The pass interference/holding penalties seem to be the most egregious. It reminds me of the strike zone in beisbol. Some umps call it tighter, some looser. That is workable as long as it is consistent. Same for PI. The problem is seeing a WR mugged with a no call and then the same crew calls PI on incidental contact.

Anyone else seeing this trend/issue?

I agree that flags are a big factor driving down ratings but I disagree about consistency. I think the problem is there are too many of them and they are slowing down the game. Also, they have added areas of focus like PI that are getting overcalled and are having a deleterious affect on the game. How many times a game are drives being extended by flags? Fans don't want to see that. They want to see drives extend or end based on the play on the field, not because of a penalty.

I don't want to be like a mega NFL homer, but I think this has a lot to do with how the players play and less to do with the rules. I don't think the rules are bad for the game in terms of what is fair. The way they have laid it out is the easiest way to have a safe game that is fair for both sides of the ball. The problem is that players A) aren't used to this, and B) try to get away with what they can and skirt the line. This puts everything in this zone of "maybe it's a penalty, maybe it isn't" and creates all of these controversial calls.

I don't really know what they can do, though. If they make the refs "let them play," there still has to be a point where it is a penalty, and all that is going to happen is that the players are going to adjust and skirt the line for that, too, and we'll be right back where we started.

I think it's a combination of both. It's incredibly annoying when we watch guys get super physical early in games only to have it be a penalty during an important drive in the 4th. That's really infuriating to me, and not even when it's against the saints. Just in general.

Yeah you guys have great points. I don't know if there's a solution, but the flags combined with the timeouts have really driven down my enjoyment of the game. I hate when I see a big play happen and then I have to wait and see if there was a flag before I can actually react. It's stupid.

flags, head hits, leading with helmet, can't touch qb this way, turning head for the ball, its all a bunch of fricking bullshite. Oh, don't have any dancing with a teammate, don't do this don't do that and its all about taking the fun and excitement out of the game.

As big as the NFL has gotten, and with the technology that allows the TV viewers to see replay after replay, it's hard to imagine there isn't a better way to officiate these games.

However, I watch 15+ hours of NFL football per week and I seem more penalties that aren't called than I see non-penalties called as penalties.

So to say that they are calling too many penalties, I understand that makes it hard to watch, but I guess it could be worse.

As mentioned above, I think it's more on the players and the way the O-lineman and DBs try to get away with holding/PI on every play. They all know the rules and what the refs look for, yet how many times do you see jerseys being stretched out and DBs smothering a WR without turning for the ball? It happens all the time.

Score more points=better ratings=protecting the QB=more holding allowed= more time to throw=more DB's desperate to check the receiver=power to control the outcome of any game.

And that should always be the case. A ref making up a penalty is 200x worse than missing a call

Well yea, of course. I don't think anyone would argue that.

ETA: Except maybe to increase 200 to 1000.

What also drives me crazy or calls like the "presnap false start" called on us versus the chiefs after the play. It shouldn't have been a penalty in the first place and was called incorrectly

Defensive holding being an auto 1st down kills me. Especially when the call is for a bump on a wide receiver who is 30 yards from where the play happened. If you are going to call it so frequent, make it a 5 yard penalty and replay the down.

The absolute worst, and I've seen it multiple times the last few years in Saints games alone, is when there are multiple PI /holding calls and teams essentially sustain drives on 3 or so penalties. It's why I barely watch now even with free Sunday ticket.

Yes sir, the PI on Robertson on forth down in the Oakland game comes to mind.

How much of it comes from the point that so many games are televised and as fans we see so much?

We see multiple games, so we see one crew calling it different from another. In addition to that you are shown all the contact and no calls. All immediately you have a guy in the booth pulling up a replay showing you how Player X got away with a hold or interference on that play and later are told that something was a good non-call.

I'm not a huge fan of illegal; contact. I think that you should be able to touch, put your hand on a hip and even guide a player prior to the ball's arrival.
