Payton Explains Thinking on Sproles Trade | Come in and Admit Your Wrongs

Pretty interesting quotes in there. I think he's truly expecting Cadet to step up and make an impact.
Very true that we'll never be able to "replace" Sproles. He's a rare asset.

Very true that we'll never be able to "replace" Sproles. He's a rare asset.
quote:
As for replacing Sproles in the Saints’ offense, Payton said third-year pro Cadet is certainly in line for more opportunities, and could be used in some of the same ways that Sproles was used. But Payton stressed that no one player will specifically “replace” a unique playmaker like Sproles.
"Over the years, offensively we've had a number of key contributors to what's been a pretty good offense. There's been times where we've done it without Marques Colston. There was an offense prior to Jimmy Graham, prior to Darren Sproles. And one of the key components is an overall understanding philosophically of where guys need to be,” Payton said. “I don't think you ever replace a skill set like Darren's. It's unique, and it's different really than our league has seen in a while with a player of his stature. But with regards to his touches, with regards to opportunities, Travaris is a guy that has played and is now going into his third year.
"(Cadet has) got very good ball skills. He's a guy that can run the routes in that tree, when you talk about a choice route, you talk about an option. He can play from in the backfield, but he can play from extend positions. That doesn't mean necessarily he's a wide receiver. It just means he's a running back in space.”
Payton said Cadet will remain in the mix for the Saints’ lead kickoff returner job. But he said the punt returner job (which used to be manned by Sproles and receiver Lance Moore) remains open.
“We’ll have to see how that competition plays out,” Payton said. “It’s something we’ll pay close attention to.”

quote:Sometimes I wonder if some NFL fans can even comprehend RBBC.
Payton said it had more to do with the Saints’ stockpile of youth at the position with young backups Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson and Travaris Cadet.

Anyway, yeah.
Things looking bad for Paddy.

The worst thing that'll happen is we have a productive player and I make a thread saying I was wrong, which if it's the case, I'll be glad to do it.

That would be very big of you.

I already said I would if it happens.
I think people think I have some sort of ego on here and won't admit when I'm wrong, but that's not the case. I've been wrong before and I've fessed up to it.

I will admit that being right sometimes leads to being wrong in the right situation which in Paddy's case will likely be more wrong than right.

I thought going into last season that IAQ had a shot at starting FS and that Jenkins was going to be absolutely terrible again. Jenkins was mediocre, IAQ was surpassed on the depth chart by Bush and was later released.
I think I might wind up being partially right and wrong about Cadet.

But it's a good kind of wrong Paddy.
Certainly, you understand.

Its about time CSP shook up the backfield. Everyone and their Moms were calling our plays by the RB packages he was putting in last year it seemed.
I still have little doubt more competition is coming for the backfield via draft and UDFA.
One mock draft had us taking Tre Mason in 2nd
All of CSP talking points are having a affect.

Certainly.
When this all started being discussed, I scoffed at the idea of Cadet filling Sproles' role. While I don't think he'll be able to fill it completely (I don't think you'll see him on those quick toss outs or returning punts, he could wind up splitting out wide or sharing 3rd down snaps with PT.

Patrick is one of the most rational posters on this board and we are lucky to have him.
There, I said it.
And I'll also co-sign that Cadet thread with you. I'm very glad to admit to being wrong about a guy not being good or not being ready, such as I was about BJJ not being ready last year.
It sucks to admit to being wrong about guys like Martez Wilson though. Man I thought he could be something.
Edit:
And IAQ too. One of the few guys that looked good in Spags' system. Just didn't fit with what Ryan does, which says a lot because Ryan finds a way to work his system to the players and not vice versa.

Well since we're admitting our wrongs...
I too was wrong about Rafael Bush. I didn't think he'd be a player to make an impact past special teams. He came out and played very well against the Hawks, and his future with the defense looks promising.
I feel like a ton has been lifted off my shoulders.

I too was wrong. I thought Toon was a lock to get a good bit of playing time. Woooo feel lighter now...
