Our situation at guard has me nervous for this year

Last year, Saints suffered from poor O-line play, most notably the interior. Evans was injured. Grubbs never lived up to the probowl hype after joining the team. Goodwin was awful in every way. DLP the year before him.
The Saints were smart, and upgraded center with a stud in Unger. They traded Grubbs and decided to keep Evans (due to loyalty?). This left Lelito as the possible starter prior to the draft.
I was shocked when we didn't draft a guard with our wealth of picks. Mainly due to Evans having health issues and Lelito really not being anything to hitch your wagon to. And please don't bring up La'el Collins. It's clear the NFL forbid teams from drafting him.
We need to make a play to sign Evan Mathis or make a trade for a veteran or young talent to shore up this situation. All reports out of camp have been that Unger is a rock, and the guards have been getting pancaked.
If we enter this season with an injured Evans and a below-average Lelito, and they perform like we fear, then I'm going to have to seriously consider that Loomis and Payton have lost their magic for good.

Wonder how closely we'll be watching the OL cuts this preseason...

I think the improvement at C will be big
Evans has allegedly looked terrible in camp, and led the league in pressures allowed from a G last year. You're right to be worried

sign Evan Mathis
This seems like what should be the most obvious answer. But if they haven't done it by now, I don't see it happening.

Agreed. The Guard positions are looking like CB last year, hoping for an old vet, and inexperience to fill the void. Hopefully, it doesn't end up as bad as the CB position did last year.

We should have just signed La'e.....
...I'm still giving Lelito the benefit of the doubt. If there's one thing we've seldom seen in the CSP era, it's mistakes and weak play from the o-line. Seems to always hit on "sleeper" guys from small schools.
In the FO, I trust.

Biggest dissapointment in the draft. Hopefully Lelito makes the coaches look like geniuses and Evans is able to stay healthy.

if kelemete is playin better than jahri, play the better damn guard. all i hope.

I'm not that worried about Lelito.
He's played well before.
Evans is just terrible.
To call him injured at this point is being generous.
He's more likely done.

For me, the biggest disappointment in the draft was not taking a guard with a pick.

His price probably comes down the longer he's unsigned

That would be good but Kelemete has been getting the majority of his reps on the second team at center. Maybe they will start rotating him here soon though as they get deeper into camp.

Peat took some snaps at RG today. He's played every position on the line except C.

Lelito at LG and Peat at RG might be base case for us talent wise this year. Kelemete backup whatever.

What would our cap situation look like if we cut Evans? I saw a blurb on rotoworld stating Mathis was looking for around 5 mil. Just wondering if we would free any money up if we parted with Jahri.

i'm fairly certain a jahri cut hardly saves us much money, still have a lot of dead money we owe him.

We'd save $697,000 since it is post June 1 with 6.3 million in dead money. He's not getting cut
