According to the CBS report, the letter asks the NFL to respond in a timely matter. The next step for the union would be to take it before the NLRB.

quote:

Brees and the NFLPA have scheduled an arbitration hearing Wednesday in Philadelphia to get a ruling on Brees' franchise tag status.

quote:

Brees has received the exclusive franchise tag twice -- once with the San Diego Chargers in 2005 and once with the Saints in March. The dispute centers on whether the new collective bargaining agreement dictates Brees should receive a 20 percent pay raise or a 44 percent raise if he is designated as the Saints' franchise player again next year.

quote:

The Saints and the NFL argue that because New Orleans has only placed the franchise tag on Brees once, he should receive a 20 percent raise, while the NFLPA believes that since next year's designation would be his third in total, he should receive a 44 percent raise. The difference between the two figures is nearly $4 million.

Man I have a bad feeling that this whole thing is about to get a lot uglier!

Read several articles about this. It's the usual 'anonymous source' crap

This sounds very difficult to prove.

I thought it would be difficult to prove as well, I cant think of any history of Loomis and Saints being shitty to a player during negotiations. This organization has become a highly touted destination as of late.

I don't think this would be an "anonymous source". It's more less "red tape" that all the lawyers during this whole new CBA process were suppossed to take care of and address. And ofcourse it's something else to impact the Saint's organization this offseason. This can definitely become a argument over who was thinking what. A mess.

This was mentioned by some local media around the time he was franchised. I just don't think they would have franchised him to prove a point. I think they were basing things around the franchise tag salary and there was a point of contention, thus the hearing today.

I dont understand what the frick they are talking about. This is only his second tag. Why would he be entitled to 44% now if he wouldnt be on his 3rd tag until the 2013 season if at all? They talk about a 3rd "future tag" but he may not even get that if they strike a deal between now or next off season. I could be way off base, but i am not understanding this obviously.

But the point here is what sort of raise he's entitled to if he gets franchised NEXT YEAR.

That is clearly a factor in his signing THIS YEAR (20% raise vs 44% raise).

Listening to Brees recently on his public appearance, it doesn't seem like Brees is that aggravated w/ the Saints. This just seems like a pure business deal. Saints have to make the best deal to still allow them to sign FAs in the future. People need to realize that if the Saints could pay Brees $25 mil per w/ no cap repercussions they probably would. This is NOT the Saints being cheap. This is the Saints thinking ahead to make sure they remain a top team for yrs to come.

Once the NFL makes the ruling, I would be surprised if the contract is not completed shortly after.

Well, i guess i do understand and it is obviously a dumb assessment. How in the frick can you allow someone to base a current salary off of a future percentage of something that may or may not ever happen? That is total BS right there. 2nd tag, 20% period.

Next year my dick may hit a growth spurt so i should be entitled to 44% increase in quality trim right now. Yeah, that makes sense.

Well that's just the terms of the CBA.

He has to perform due diligence with regards to this, and this can also have a huge impact with the team, as well.

Not to mention he is a big player in the NFLPA and this would set a precedent for future players that may be tagged by different teams.

Not dumb from Saints perspective. If they are right it's cheaper to just Tag Drew the next 2 years than pay what he is asking.

If Drew's argument prevails, and I don't think it will, then it's cheaper to give him the deal now.

This could speed up this deal getting done. If they rule that brees would get the 44% then he would make around 23 mil this season so loomis would probably just give brees the 20/yr he was asking for.

It doesn't look ugly. It looks like a test case for both sides to see how the new CBA will be interepreted in the future.

The difference is what they pay him this year, if its considered the first tag he gets around 16MIL, if this is the second tag he gets around 19.5MIL.

Just sign the contract for 20MIL
