Here's my beef-
So they were lucky hitting on Evans (and Nicks and Jahri was a tackle coming out of college). Goodwin was a solid FA pickup at Center for 5 years. That doesn't mean you quit investing in the position.

Guards drafted by the Saints under Payton: 2007 Andy Alleman 3rd Rd and 2012 Andrew Tiller 6th Rd
Centers drafted by Saints under Payton: 2020 Matt Tennant 5th Rd

I looked back over a few years trying to figure who would have been the best pick for this. Came up with this- SJB at #58 in 2014 was considered a reach. The Raiders took Gabe Jackson at #81. He's a Top 15 guard now (PFF).

Payton truly relies on UDFA's too much and it's scary. We have alluded to drafting O-line for so long and it's not like we are big spenders in free agency. At some point that they weren't going go have any Guards.

I've wondered if the early jackpot hits on Evans and Nicks skewed their perspective to thinking they were some small school late round or UDFA wizard pickers.

Wrong metaphor but the lower your batting average the more HRs and RBIs ya need to survive. The batting average on draft picks has fallen off without sluggers here or there.

While I don't disagree with this thread, we did have the highest paid guard combo in the NFL with Evans and Grubbs. Also traded for Unger.

The thing is, the Unger trade made sense because we had ignored C for so long like we've now done with G

If you can get 1-2 starters in a draft I consider it a success. Saints don't go BPA early enough IMO.

Right year wrong guard. Right pick was Trai Turner. Dude is a true stud. Road grader that has given up I think 2 sacks in 2 years.

If you look around the NFL guard seems to be an issue. Could it be the evolution of college offenses has stunted the development of good guards coming into the NFL?

Andrew Tiller has actually turned into a decent guard and is starting for the 49ers. We need a new OL coach.
