Something struck me about New Orleans Saints second-round picks Michael Thomas and Vonn Bell at the team's rookie minicamp this past weekend.

It was confidence.

They weren't cocky, they simply possessed a level of confidence I can't recall from many rookies this early in the process.

Sure, Reggie Bush walked in with a swagger in 2006. Mark Ingram came to New Orleans with a more workmanlike demeanor in 2011. Both of these players won national championships for football powers USC and Alabama, respectively.

So maybe the Ohio State championship on the résumés of Thomas and Bell helped breed a little bravado.

That could help a Saints locker room in need of some swagger.

Thomas and Bell wasted no time demonstrating theirs to their fellow rookies and new coaches. They battled on the practice field just like they battled at Ohio State.

"Well, Vonn, we're both competitors," said Thomas, who caught 18 touchdowns the past two seasons. "We're from Ohio State. We always want to compete. We always want to win. That's just how we were brought up. Even in practice, and even though it's the NFL now and I don't want to be too chirpy, but we're getting out there and talking stuff.

"I had to tell Coach it's an Ohio State thing. I can't let him beat me. But Vonn's a great player, and I'm excited to have him back there. He's someone you can trust. ... That's my roommate. That's my friend. My brother. I like competing and getting each other better. That's how you get better.

Are we still saying "swagger"?

That's all you gleamed from the article. Try watching The Cooler with William H Macy. It is a lonely endeavor.

I loved both of these picks and if you follow them on twitter, they're both really down to earth guys with their heads on right. This might be the best draft class we've had since 2006.

Two draft picks from a national championship team seem like they're solid individuals. Great. That's awesome. I want to see them play. That's all I care about.

Urban Meyer on draft night called Thomas a tough SOB. Said he gets into a scuffle at practice at least a couple of times a week cuz he is so aggressive.

Saints said he was the #1 WR on their board. Rightfully so, a perfect Colston replacement. This offense spreads it around but I truly think he could surpass Colston's rookie numbers-
70 catches 1038yds 8 TDs

Well, if that's your attitude, then wait to the regular season, comment on their play, then. In the meantime, I think others want news on the draft picks. You may be more happy ignoring all news on the draft picks, unles they get in trouble.

Just like teams that bring in Super Bowl veterans to instill a winning and hard working attitude to their team, the Saints have drafted two players of high character, talent, and competitive drive from a championship team.

What I gleamed from the article:

quote:

"Well, Vonn, we're both competitors," said Thomas, who caught 18 touchdowns the past two seasons. "We're from Ohio State. We always want to compete. We always want to win. That's just how we were brought up. Even in practice, and even though it's the NFL now and I don't want to be too chirpy, but we're getting out there and talking stuff.

These picks speak volumes of the improvement in scouting, attitude, and the thinking of the Saints organization going forward.

Hopefully this means he's a 6'3" Steve Smith.
