It doesn't look like Barkley really helped himself too much. I think Geno Smith goes in the top 10, but I'm not sure if Barkley will go top 15 and push down a top defensive or OT prospect.

Some teams in front of us who may be interested in a quarterback: 1 Kansas City, 2 Jacksonville, 3 Oakland, 4 Philadelphia, 7 Arizona, 8 Buffalo and 9 New York Jets.

Here are the reviews:

SI- so-so pro day

quote:

his first public workout since separating his right (throwing) shoulder in mid-November loss to UCLA was more solid than spectacular.

In fact, when one potential employer uses the word "efficient" to describe a passing session that has been scripted and rehearsed for several weeks, and another potential employer watches and says the QB had adequate arm strength "to a point," it's not a reach to say the performance was underwhelming.

quote:

Jacksonville and Oakland are rumored to be in the market for a quarterback, and each had representatives in attendance.

quote:

Make of that what you will, but at least two other scouts commented on how some of Barkley's deep throws fluttered in a relatively gentle breeze."If he thinks this is windy, wait until he gets to Philly or New York or Buffalo," one coach said. "But he's working his way back from that injury. Hopefully he'll get stronger as he goes."

quote:

For the most part Barkley put the ball where it could be caught, but the performance was not pristine. At times receivers had to make acrobatic catches, on other occasions they had to wait for the ball to arrive. That's a red flag after weeks of rehearsal.

NFL.com - mixed reviews

quote:

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock would have liked to have seen a tighter spiral on throws that fluttered a bit against the wind, but noted that Barkley's deep-ball accuracy was a strong part of the workout.

quote:

"There's no knock (against him)," Mayock added. "His arm strength is what I thought it was. It's good. It's just not elite."

quote:

There was interest in Barkley's progress from the injury since he did not work out in front of scouts at the Senior Bowl in January or throw at the NFL scouting combine in February. Yet, Barkley appeared crisp, completing 55-of-60 attempts during the rehearsed passing display.

Take some Matt Leinhart, a little Mark Sanchez, sprinkle some David Booty and Matt Cassel, and a pinch of Carson Palmer and what do you get ……

Matt Barkley.

moving on….

Yeah, his USC heritage isn't helping him much.

I also think his ties to Carson Palmer, via USC, and Lane Kiffen make Oakland pass on him. He probably has a little too much Sanchez taint on him for the Jets to touch him either.

I could see a team like Buffalo or Arizona trying to trade back into the first to get him. Maybe not at 15, but somewhere.

I smell Jimmy Clausen/Brady Quinn/Leinart syndrome all over this guy.

Too over-hyped or over-lauded since HS or college for a scouting guru to concede that the prospect just won't amount to anything more than a backup in the NFL.

USC ... a fine tradition of littering the NFL with sub-par QB's...

I can't wait to watch the draft, and watch the cameras hone in on him, and his dissapointment as he waits for that phone to ring.

if Blaine Gabbert can be a top 10 pick, so can Matt Barkely.

the Vikings shocked a lot of people by reaching for Christian Ponder.

and hell, Mark Sanchez was a top 5 pick.

so while I agree that Barkley isn't anything special, it just takes one team to like the guy. And since this year's free agent class wasn't anything special either, Barkley could end up going a lot higher than what we think he should.

hoping so anyway
